Traditional Composite Bow — Four Core Bow Systems, Craft, and Heritage
Sinew, Horn, and Wood — A Millennium of Composite Craft
English
Before gunpowder, before steel, the composite bow was one of the most sophisticated weapons ever devised by human hands. It is not a simple wooden bow. It is a precisely laminated structural system engineered from three core natural materials — horn, sinew, and wood/bamboo core — supplemented with traditional fish swim bladder glue and protective finishes. Each material is selected for unique mechanical properties, layered and processed following ancient craftsmanship rules, whose mechanical principles were only fully verified by modern stress analysis and material mechanics. The traditional composite bow stands as one of the most precise and efficient pre-modern cold weapon systems in human civilization.
What makes it extraordinary is its unmatched energy efficiency. A well-crafted traditional composite bow stores far more kinetic energy per unit weight than any single-piece wooden bow. It features a compact structure, fast arrow velocity, and powerful penetration, balancing portability and lethality perfectly. More importantly, it is an intangible cultural heritage craft that has been passed down for thousands of years, surviving wars and technological iterations to thrive in modern traditional archery. A bow cannot function in isolation; its performance relies on matched traditional arrows crafted with corresponding natural materials, forming a complete archery set handed down through history.

Anatomy & Core Materials — Precise Material Matching & Mechanical Principles
English
The core wisdom of the composite bow lies in complementary material mechanics, solving the structural defects of single-material bows. When drawn, the bow belly (archer’s side) bears huge compressive force, while the bow back bears strong tensile force. No single natural material can resist both forces efficiently, and the composite structure perfectly complements this defect.
The traditional all-natural composite bow adopts a three-layer main structure with auxiliary adhesive and protective materials, with strict selection standards for each component:
1. Wood / Bamboo Core (Bow Tare) — Structural Foundation
As the skeleton of the bow, the core undertakes structural support and force transmission. Two mainstream core materials exist in global traditional craft:
Hardwood core (mulberry, maple) dominates most European, Central and West Asian composite bows, stable under dry climates.
Bamboo core is the signature of Chinese imperial composite bows represented by Ju Yuan Hao. Craftsmen select thick, straight bamboo from Jiangxi, air-dried for a minimum of 12 months to eliminate internal moisture and residual stress. Thin bamboo strips are laminated together to form the primary bow body, then fitted with hardwood grip and wooden ear tips. Ju Yuan Hao’s 300-year Qing court bow-making technique takes bamboo as the primary core material, confirmed by national intangible cultural heritage archives.
All core materials feature moderate hardness, strong torsion resistance, and stable texture after long-term seasoning, avoiding bow distortion or breakage under repeated stress. The core needs to be cut, polished, and shaped precisely according to bow type standards to form the basic radian of the bow.
2. Horn Layer (Bow Belly) — Compression Resistance Core
Attached to the inner belly of the bow, horn is responsible for resisting compressive force during drawing. Traditional bows mainly use straight buffalo horn and wild goat horn, with strict screening: only straight, complete, non-aging horn sections are qualified. Buffalo horn has excellent compressive resistance and toughness, not easy to crack under heavy compression. A complete pair of horns can only make one bow, making qualified horn materials extremely rare and precious. After cutting, grinding, and flattening, the horn pieces are perfectly fitted to the core’s radian to form a stable compression layer.
3. Sinew Layer (Bow Back) — Tensile Resistance Core
Pasted on the outer back of the bow, animal sinew undertakes all tensile force during bow drawing and energy storage. The best material is ox dorsal tendons, supplemented by ox hoof tendons. Fresh sinews need strict post-processing: full air-drying to remove all moisture, repeated pounding and kneading to loosen the fiber structure, and manual tearing into filamentous fine fibers. The treated sinew fibers have ultra-high tensile strength and elasticity, which can stretch uniformly when the bow is drawn and retract rapidly to release kinetic energy when released.
4. Core Auxiliary Material — Traditional Fish Swim Bladder Glue (Isinglass)
The bonding effect determines the durability and performance stability of the composite bow. Modern chemical glue is rigid and easy to crack, while traditional crafts use fish swim bladder glue refined by boiling and concentrating fish swim bladders. This natural biological glue has both super adhesion and flexible toughness. It can follow the bow’s repeated stretching and compression without cracking or peeling, and fits perfectly with natural wood, bamboo, horn, and sinew materials, becoming the invisible core of the composite structure. For surface protection, birch bark, natural lacquer, and snake skin are widely used as finishing layers, a hallmark of Ju Yuan Hao finished bows.

硬木胎(桑木、槭木)多用于欧洲、中亚、西亚复合弓,干燥环境下稳定性突出;
Full Traditional Craftsmanship Process — Ancient Lamination & Aging Standards
English
A pure traditional horn-sinew composite bow requires 6–12 months of pure manual work, following seasonal climate rules and strict procedural standards. The whole process includes material seasoning, fine processing, layered lamination, shaping, curing, finishing, bow tuning, and matching arrow crafting, with zero industrial intervention.
1. Material Seasoning (Foundation Step)
All raw materials must undergo natural seasonal seasoning: wood/bamboo cores are air-dried for more than 6–12 months to eliminate internal moisture and residual stress; horn pieces are soaked, shaped, and naturally aged to stabilize molecular structure; sinews are fully dehydrated at constant temperature and humidity to avoid mildew and deformation. Unseasoned materials will cause bow distortion, layer peeling, or performance attenuation in later use.
2. Fine Material Processing
The wood/bamboo core is polished repeatedly to ensure smooth and flat bonding surface; horn pieces are finely ground to match the radian of the core 100%; sinews are torn into uniform filaments and sorted to ensure consistent fiber tension. All processing follows manual precision standards, no mechanical cutting, to retain the natural toughness of materials.
3. Layered Lamination & Gluing (Core Step)
Heat the refined fish glue to a constant temperature, apply it evenly to the bonding surfaces of core, horn, and sinew, and carry out layered fitting. The horn layer is closely attached to the core belly, and the sinew fibers are evenly laid on the core back in layers, with uniform force and no gaps or overlaps. After lamination, the bow body is fixed with a special shaping fixture for preliminary curing.
4. Long-term Natural Curing
This is the most critical step affecting performance. The laminated bow body is placed in a constant temperature and humidity environment for slow curing for 3–6 months, allowing the fish glue to fully solidify and penetrate, and the three materials to form an integrated stress structure. Rapid drying or industrial curing will destroy the material toughness and reduce the bow’s service life.
5. Shaping, Polishing & Protective Finishing
After curing, the bow is demolded and trimmed, polished repeatedly to smooth the bow body, and adjusted to standard radian and draw weight. Finally, traditional protective treatments such as lacquer sealing, birch bark wrapping, snakeskin veneer are applied to prevent moisture, mildew, and wear, improving environmental adaptability.
6. Bow Tuning & Calibration
After finishing, the bow undergoes repeated trial drawing and parameter calibration to balance left and right stress, stabilize arrow speed and shooting trajectory, and ensure consistent performance of the finished bow.
7. Matching Traditional Arrow Production (Complementary Craft)
No traditional composite bow is complete without handcrafted matched arrows, a craft fully preserved by Ju Yuan Hao alongside bow-making. The full arrow workflow includes shaft straightening, bark polishing, spine calibration, feather fletching, arrowhead mounting and lacquer sealing. Classic traditional arrow shafts use straight bamboo or hardwood; fletching uses wild goose/turkey natural feathers; arrowheads include stone, bone, bronze, iron and field hunting tips. Qing military bows paired heavy thick bamboo arrows with high penetration, while Korean compact composite bows matched thin, lightweight wooden arrows for maximum velocity. Modern traditional archers use natural wooden/bamboo arrows for authentic shooting experience, or carbon arrows for daily practice.

Global Traditional Composite Bow Classification — Four Core Systems, Five Historical Lineages
English
For practitioners newly engaging with traditional archery, this guide first introduces four widely recognized mainstream composite bow variants — Chinese Manchu Bow, Korean Gakgung, Hungarian Recurve, and Taiwanese Modern Improved Bow — a concise grouping that covers the most commonly encountered types in today’s traditional archery community.
To fully trace the evolution of composite bow civilizations across Eurasia and cover all regional lineages, however, the historical framework expands into five complete regional traditional systems. This dual-layer logic — a four-type overview for quick orientation, and a five-lineage in-depth structure for comprehensive study — respects both the practical needs of beginners and the historical completeness required for serious research.
Traditional composite bows have evolved independently across Eurasia for thousands of years, forming complete and distinctive regional systems. Based on historical origin, structural design, usage scenario, and craftsmanship characteristics, the full historical spectrum divides into five major traditional lineages, covering East Asia, Central Asia, West Asia, and Europe, each with distinct performance and styling differences.
1. Chinese Traditional Composite Bow System (East Asian Core)
As the most complete and inherited composite bow system, it has a development history of more than 3,000 years, with rich internal classification:
Manchu Bow (Qing Bow): The peak of ancient Chinese battlefield bows. Long limbs, stable draw, matched with heavy bamboo military arrows, outstanding penetration and long-range performance, wide shooting tolerance, suitable for historical combat reconstruction and modern traditional competitive archery. It remains the most widely practiced heritage composite bow, the core craft preserved by Ju Yuan Hao’s 300-year imperial workshop tradition, adopting multi-layer bamboo as core bow material.
Mongolian Bow: Classic nomadic horseback bow. Compact and flexible with strong instantaneous power, engineered for high-speed mounted shooting, adapted to cold, arid steppe climates. Simple, robust structure fit for hunting and mobile warfare, with strong environmental adaptability.
Han & Tang Ancient Bows: Early prototype of Chinese composite bows, gentle curve and moderate draw weight, balanced shooting performance, laying the foundational lamination mechanics for later Chinese composite bow development.
2. Korean Gakgung (Korean Traditional Horn Bow)
Representative compact East Asian composite bow. Short, streamlined limbs with lightweight construction, optimized for high arrow velocity within a compact frame, built for intensive horseback archery and paired with slim lightweight wooden arrows. Demands refined archer technique with sensitive, precise feedback, central to Korean traditional archery inheritance and competitions.
3. Central Asian Steppe Composite Bow (Scythian & Turkic Bow)
The technological origin of Eurasian composite bows. Ultra-short recurve limbs, powerful rebound, outstanding portability. Dominated steppe warfare across Eurasia for over a millennium, designed for nomadic long-distance migration and mobile combat, reaching peak mechanical efficiency for ancient craft.
4. West Asian Composite Bow (Persian & Arabian Bow)
Represented by Safavid Persian and classical Arabian bows, elegant limb curves with balanced draw and rebound, superior long-range performance. Focused on precision and distant coverage for foot archery assaults, featuring unique regional lamination and material matching techniques.
5. European Traditional Composite Bow (Hungarian & Byzantine Bow)
Europe’s fully mature composite bow lineage, led by Hungarian recurve and Byzantine composite bows. Balanced, versatile construction compatible with foot and mounted archery, moderate power and exceptional stability, suited to medieval European warfare and hunting; the core bow type for Western traditional archery revival.
Modern Improved Composite Bow: Contemporary derivative branch under the five global systems, represented by Taiwanese refined composite bows (Zhang Yuhua) and mainland Chinese laminated bows such as the Mariner series. Retains traditional horn-sinew-wood/bamboo composite mechanics while optimizing material ratios and lamination to boost moisture resistance and structural stability, resolving the fragility of antique pure natural composite bows.

The Bowyers — Where Tradition Lives
English
A composite bow’s quality hinges entirely on the bowyer’s decades of craft experience; master artisans must master both bow construction and matched arrow fabrication. Traditional bowmaking relies on seasonal material handling and empirical craft logic rather than industrial standardized parameters. A fully proficient heritage bowyer requires over ten years of practice to master material stress balance and curing rhythms.
Within China’s intangible heritage field, Ju Yuan Hao in Beijing stands as the sole national-level inheritor base for Manchu bow craft, founded in 1720 as one of the 17 imperial bow workshops within the Dongsi Bow Yard. Its 300-year lineage preserves complete Qing court bow-and-arrow handcraft, using multi-layer Jiangxi bamboo as core limb material, adhering fully to unmechanized ancient workflows, representing the highest standard of native Chinese composite bow craft. The current inheritor Yang Fuxi learned the full ancestral craft from his father Yang Wentong, the last elder master of the workshop.
In the field of modern optimized traditional bows, Zhang Yuhua in Taiwan has earned international recognition for his practical, reliable designs. He retains classic horn-sinew composite construction and traditional fish glue techniques, while refining lamination proportions to improve daily usability.
On the mainland, a parallel grassroots revival has taken shape. Mariner, a Hubei-based craftsman who began making bamboo bows in the early 2000s before developing bamboo-fiberglass laminated construction, has built the Mariner series into a mainstream global choice among traditional archers for its consistent quality and balanced performance.
For entry-level practice gear, mainstream brands Alibow and AF Archery adopt eco-friendly modern laminated materials, replicating the silhouette and shooting feel of composite bows while lowering maintenance barriers and entry costs, supplied alongside matching fiberglass/carbon practice arrows for new archers.

How to Choose — A Practical Path
English
Natural bamboo, horn and sinew composite bows require strict regular maintenance, and arrow matching directly shapes shooting experience. New archers should adopt a progressive learning route to avoid unnecessary equipment damage and losses.
Those newly entering traditional archery are recommended to start with fiberglass simulated composite bows plus factory carbon practice arrows. Moisture-resistant, low-maintenance and forgiving of unrefined shooting form, they let archers master stance, draw and release fundamentals without risking damage to high-value heritage craftwork.
After stabilizing consistent shooting technique, upgrade to intermediate laminated composite bows paired with semi-handmade wooden arrows. This tier delivers authentic traditional shooting feedback, superior energy storage to fiberglass models, and far lighter upkeep burden than full natural composite bows, perfect for steady skill advancement.
Only archers with solid shooting form and thorough understanding of traditional craft maintenance routines ought to consider pure horn-sinew composite bows matched with fully handmade bamboo/wood traditional arrows. Natural composite limbs are extremely sensitive to humidity and temperature, prone to delamination or mold in damp environments, requiring regular wax care and constant-temperature storage — a high threshold for casual hobbyists.
The recommended starting draw weight for adult archers is 30–40 lbs. This range fully demonstrates composite bow energy storage characteristics without straining muscle groups or distorting shooting posture, leaving space for future poundage upgrades. Arrow spine must be strictly matched to bow draw weight to guarantee stable flight and precision.
Core practical tip: Do not purchase a full traditional horn-sinew composite bow as your first bow. Cumbersome maintenance, steep learning curve and high craft value create a high risk of irreversible damage for inexperienced new archers. Start with simulation and laminated gear, build craft knowledge and shooting proficiency gradually before investing in authentic ancient composite bows.

The material mechanical logic mastered by ancient artisans thousands of years ago remains scientifically rigorous under modern material analysis. Its unique heterogeneous multi-layer composite structure, efficient energy storage system, and full set of refined bow-and-arrow workflows exceed the technical limitations of its historical era.
Today, archery craft represented by Ju Yuan Hao’s complete workflow is globally recognized precious intangible heritage. Every procedure, from raw material seasonal seasoning and layered lamination to arrow shaft straightening and feather fitting, carries accumulated practical wisdom of generations of craftsmen. Choosing a matched set of traditional bow and arrow means connecting with a thousand-year cultural lineage that unifies bow and arrow as an inseparable craft whole.
It carries cross-generational bowyer inheritance, witnesses the exchange and integration of Eurasian archery culture, and embodies the perfect fusion of ancient handcraft ingenuity and mechanical science. Stripped of its ancient battlefield identity, paired bow and arrow together stand as a timeless, complete cultural treasure spanning thousands of years.
