To look up is instinct. To turn that view into a calculable system, and to measure the earth as a sphere of known radius——that took centuries, and a relay of civilizations. This column follows humanity’s repeated recalibration of its place in the cosmos: from centre to periphery, from a unique world to a planet among many. Each recalibration came with its own small act of humility.
The thread continues through parallax, the maps that redrew the world, and the telescopes that revealed the depths.
