Four Generations, Not Under One Roof – What English Cannot Carry Out of 四世同堂

四世同堂不是「Four Generations Under One Roof」:被一个介词抹去的堂
Four Generations, Not Under One Roof — What English Cannot Carry Out of 四世同堂

English

It is four in the afternoon in the main room of a north-China house. Light comes in through the south window, crosses the eight-immortal table, and stops — past that table the room is simply darker. On the altar table the ancestral tablets have not been dusted today, yet they are not dusty either; it is a cleanliness maintained by time rather than by hands. The great-grandmother sits at the seat of honour. Her son sits to her right. Her grandson sits nearer the door. The child plays by the threshold, allowed to be noisy, not allowed to cross the table. Nobody has announced the seating. Everybody knows it.

The room smells of burnt incense, camphor wood, and cotton that has been shut away too long over winter.

Now translate it: Four generations under one roof.

What a roof actually covers

一片屋顶真正盖住的是什么

English
A roof is measurable. It has a span, a height, a number of tiles; it keeps rain off the people beneath it. In English, “under one roof” is a warm phrase — it suggests closeness, convenience, a family that has not scattered. But it measures coverage, not order. It tells you that four generations share a shelter. It does not tell you which one of them is facing south.

The Chinese title of Lao She’s novel does not speak of a roof at all. It speaks of 堂. And 堂 is not the thing over your head.

中文
屋顶是可测量的。它有跨度、有高度、有多少片瓦;它替下面的人挡雨。在英文里,”under one roof” 是个温暖的短语——暗示亲密、方便、一个还没有散掉的家。但它量的是覆盖,不是秩序。它告诉你四代人共用一片遮蔽,却不告诉你其中哪一位面朝南方。

老舍这部小说的中文标题,从头到尾没提屋顶。它说的是「堂」。而「堂」,不是头顶上那个东西。

堂 is not “hall”: six layers inside one character

堂不是「hall」:一个字里的六层空间

English
《说文解字》 records 堂 as 殿也 — a hall, a raised chamber. The Qing scholar 段玉裁 adds that 堂之言尚也,尚,上也: the word carries the sense of raised, high, above. That is the first thing English misses — 堂 is not a room, it is a room that has been lifted.

From there the character accumulates layers, and no single English word reaches more than one of them:

  • 堂屋 / 中堂 — the central bay of the main house, where the ancestral tablets and the hanging scroll live. Not a living room; a room that is formally arranged.
  • 高堂 — a respectful term for one’s parents, as in 高堂明镜悲白发. Height becomes reverence.
  • 登堂入室 — to enter the 堂 and then the inner 室. The 堂 is the outer, public, formal half of a house; the 室 is the private one. To say someone has 登堂 but not 入室 is to say they have mastered the visible part and not the interior.
  • 祠堂 — the ancestral hall, where a lineage sacrifices, records, and settles disputes. The 堂 is where a family exercises authority.
  • 堂兄弟 / 堂姐妹 — patrilineal cousins who share a grandfather. Here 堂 turns blood into architecture: relatives are named after the space they belong to.
  • 堂堂正正 — upright, open, aboveboard. The 堂 becomes a moral adjective.

So 堂 means raised, central, public, ancestral, authoritative, upright. English offers hall, court, chamber, main room — and each one picks up a single shard.

世 versus generation: depth against width

世 与 generation:纵深对横面

English
The second loss is in the counting word. 世 is not the same unit as generation. 《说文解字》 glosses 世 as 三十年为一世 — thirty years make one 世 — and in ordinary use it counts the link between a father and his child, not a cohort of people born in the same decade. Four 世 is a vertical chain: great-grandfather, grandfather, father, child, standing one behind another in time.

Generation is a horizontal slice. It gathers everyone born around the same time and lays them side by side. “Four generations” therefore produces four slices arranged next to one another — and “under one roof” gives them a floor plan.

This is the hinge of the whole problem. In 四世同堂, the 四 measures depth of time — how far back a single bloodline reaches while still alive. In Four Generations Under One Roof, the four measures width of space — how many people can be fitted beneath a ceiling. The translation has not mistranslated a word. It has rotated the sentence ninety degrees: what was vertical becomes horizontal, and what was a lineage becomes an occupancy.

Two English titles, two different losses

两个英译名,两种不同的丢失

English
The novel’s history in English makes the point without any help from a critic, because it produced two titles and each one dropped half of the original.

The Yellow Storm. In 1951 Harcourt Brace published an English version under this title. It was produced in an unusual way: Lao She read his own text aloud, section by section, to Ida Pruitt, who did not read Chinese but understood it when spoken, and typed the English directly as he read. Lao She also cut heavily — he had suggested removing at least 200,000 characters. The title was his own choice; his son Shu Yi recalled that “yellow storm” meant a storm among the yellow peoples, China and Japan both. Here the translator keeps the war and abandons the family. Four generations disappear; a continent appears.

Four Generations Under One Roof. This literal rendering became the common way to say 四世同堂 in English — it is the version taught to Chinese students of English and the one that appeared as a translation test item in the 2019 national College English Test (Band 4). Here the translator keeps the family and loses the 堂. The lineage survives; the room where the lineage is ranked does not.

One title exchanges the image; the other builds a roof. Neither carries 堂 across. That is not a failure of skill. It is what happens when a language has a word for a room that is simultaneously a building, a rank, an altar and a moral claim, and the other language has the word roof.

中文
这部小说在英文中的遭遇,不需要任何批评家帮忙就能说明问题——因为它产生了两个书名,而每一个都丢掉了原文的一半。

The Yellow Storm(黄色风暴)。

Four Generations Under One Roof。

Why 堂 will not travel

为什么「堂」走不过去

English
Because 堂 is not an object. It is an arrangement of relationships. English can translate the roof, which is a thing, and the generations, which are people. What it cannot translate is who sits where — and, more precisely, why nobody has to be told.

The hardest thing to carry across a language is never the vocabulary. It is the silence of a seating order.

中文
因为「堂」不是一个物体,而是一种关系的安排。英文能译出屋顶(一件东西)与四代人(一些人),译不出的是谁坐在哪里——更准确地说,译不出为什么这件事根本不必有人开口交代。

跨越语言时最难搬运的从来不是词汇,而是座次的沉默。

A closing note

尾声

English
When a novel crosses into another language, what travels is what can be counted: four people, one roof, one war. What stays behind is what cannot: who sat at the head, who stayed by the threshold, whose smell was left in the cotton that had been shut away too long over winter.

Translation can move the house. It cannot move what the house arranged.

中文
一部小说跨入另一种语言时,能带走的总是可以数的:四个人,一片屋顶,一场战争。留下来的是不可数的:谁坐在上位,谁留在门槛边,谁的气味留在那整个冬天关得太久的棉布里。

翻译搬得动房屋,搬不动房屋所安排的东西。
