四方误译:East, South, West, North 不是「东南西北」
Four Directions, Four Fates — Why “East, South, West, North” Is Not 东南西北
English
You are standing at an intersection in a city you do not know. Your phone says: Head north on Chang’an Street for 400 metres. In English, north is a direction and nothing more — a line on a compass, an arrow inside a blue circle, a fact about where your body should go next.
Now say the same sentence in Chinese, and listen to what the word drags behind it.
中文
你站在一个陌生城市的十字路口。手机提示:沿长安街向北行进400米。在英文里,north 只是一个方向,不多不少 – 罗盘上的一条线,蓝色圆圈里的一支箭头,一个关于身体下一步往哪儿去的事实。
现在用中文说同一句话,听听这个词身后拖着什么。
North — the direction you turn your back on
北:你转过身去背对的那个方向
English
向北. Běi. In Chinese, 北 is not a coordinate; it is the direction you turn your back on. The earliest form of the character shows two figures standing back to back — 北 was originally 背, the back, the act of turning away. 《说文解字》 glosses it as 乖也, “to turn against.” Deep inside the word, to go north is to turn around and leave.
So the language grew a whole family of losses around it. 败北 — to be defeated, literally “defeated with the back turned,” because the loser turns his back and runs. 山北为阴 — the north face of a mountain is the shaded face. 北上 — travelling north, a phrase that in Chinese writing so often carries the taste of departure. And 坐北朝南 — to sit backed by the north and facing the south — is what an emperor does.
South — the direction that faces the light
南:面向光的那个方向
English
If north is where the back turns, south is where the face turns. 南 is the direction of 阳 — of sunlight, of the living, of the one who receives homage. A ruler 南面而治, “governs facing south”; to 南面称王 is to be king. The geography agrees: 山南水北为阳 — the south side of a hill and the north bank of a river are the sunlit ones.
Here translation runs into a problem no better word can solve. South in English is neutral; in Chinese it is already a verdict about rank. A translator may render 南面而治 as “governed facing south” and be perfectly accurate — and the reader will see an architectural detail where the original made a claim to the throne.
East and West — host and guest, sunrise and sunset
东与西:主与客,日出与日落
English
The other two axes are no emptier. To 做东 is to host, because in the old ritual the host took the eastern step and the guest the western. From the same root come 东道主 (the host), 东家 (the master of a house), and 房东 (the landlord). East is the position of the one who pours the tea.
West, meanwhile, is where the sun goes out. 归西, 驾鹤西去, 上西天 — all mean to die, and all of them point west, because that is the direction the light leaves by. Even the everyday word for “things,” 东西 — literally east-west — carries the old grammar of pairing that runs through so much of Chinese.
中文
另外两条轴也并不更空。「做东」就是做主人 – 因为古礼之中,主人走东阶,客人走西阶。同一根上长出东道主、东家、房东。「东」是斟茶那个人的位置。
而「西」,是太阳熄灭的方向。归西、驾鹤西去、上西天 – 都指死亡,都指向西,因为那是光离开的方向。就连日常指物的「东西」,字面就是「东—西」,身上带着那种贯穿中文的两两成对的古老语法。
Four guardians, not four points
四位守卫,而非四个点
English
Chinese did not leave the directions as geometry. It gave each one a body, a colour, a season and a temper: 东青龙 the Azure Dragon, 西白虎 the White Tiger, 南朱雀 the Vermilion Bird, 北玄武 the Black Tortoise. These are the 四象, the Four Symbols — and they are not decoration on a compass. They are the reason a direction in Chinese can be felt as a guardian rather than read as a bearing.
中文
中文没有把方位留在几何学里。它给每一个方位配了身体、颜色、季节与性情:东青龙、西白虎、南朱雀、北玄武。这就是四象 – 它们不是罗盘上的装饰,而是中文里一个方位能被感知为守卫者、而非仅仅被读成一个方位角的原因。
A note on English: it is not empty either
关于英文的一点说明:它也并不空
English
It would be easy to conclude that Chinese directions are heavy and English ones light. That is a binary this site tries to avoid. English directions carry freight too — just freight loaded at different docks. The West is not a compass point but a civilisation, and during the Cold War it was a bloc; the East was its shadow. Global North and Global South divide the world by wealth, not latitude. Go West meant expansion, the Wild West meant lawlessness, and in American English down South still carries a whole history inside three letters.
What differs is not the amount of meaning but the kind. Chinese directions were shaped by ritual, light and kinship — by who faces whom. English directions were shaped by empire, economics and latitude — by who lies north of whom. Both are loaded. Neither translates cleanly.
中文
很容易得出一个结论:中文的方位是重的,英文的方位是轻的。那会是一种本站试图回避的二元对立。英文的方位同样载着重量——只是在不同的码头装载的货物。The West 不是一个罗盘方位,而是一种文明,在冷战期间更是一个阵营;the East 是它的影子。Global North 与 Global South 按照财富而非纬度划分世界。Go West 意味着拓张,the Wild West 意味着法外之地,而在美式英语里 down South 这三个字母中仍裹着整段历史。
区别在于意义的分量相近而种类不同。中文的方位由礼仪、光照与亲族塑成 – 由「谁面向谁」塑成。英文的方位由帝国、经济与纬度塑成 – 由「谁在谁的北方」塑成。两边都载着东西,两边都译不干净。
What translation flattens
翻译抹平的是什么
English
When 北上 becomes “go north,” nothing a map can miss is lost. The distance is the same, the destination is the same, the traveller arrives at the same door. What disappears is the weather: the shade behind the mountain, the back turned on an enemy, the faint taste of leaving.
A translation can carry the coordinate. It cannot carry the orientation. And orientation — which way a culture decided to face — is very often the thing the sentence was actually about.
中文
当「北上」变成 “go north”,地图能察觉的东西一样没丢。距离相同,终点相同,旅人抵达同一扇门。消失的是气候:山后的阴影,背对敌人的那一转身,离别那一点淡淡的滋味。
翻译能带走坐标,带不走朝向。而朝向 – 一种文化决定面向哪一边 – 往往正是那句话真正要说的事。
