Why Four?
GreatFour 核心哲学 · The Core Philosophy of Great Four
English
A person who sees the world only with their eyes sees half of it. What truly determines how much of the world a civilization can perceive is not the eye, but the framework it uses to organize what the eye takes in. And in human history, few frameworks have been chosen — independently, repeatedly, across civilizations with no contact between them — as often as the number four.
At the top of this site’s homepage sit four characters: 天地人心 — Heaven, Earth, Humanity, Mind. Heaven is order and time. Earth is space and the ground beneath all things. Humanity is the unfolding of communities and civilizations. Mind is the awareness each individual carries within all of it. These four characters are not ornamental — they are the coordinate system through which Chinese civilization located itself in the world: Heaven and Earth running vertical, Humanity and Mind running horizontal, crossing to form a cross a person could stand on.
But if four were merely a Chinese preference, this coordinate system would not be so hard to look away from. What makes it impossible to ignore is that the same instinct was reinvented, independently, by civilizations that never spoke to one another.
Ancient Greeks explained matter through earth, water, fire, and air. Ancient Indian Ayurveda and Greek medicine, with no contact between them, both arrived at four-part models of the body. Buddhism organizes suffering, its cause, its cessation, and the path out of it into Four Noble Truths. Mesopotamian astrologers divided the sky into four directions; the Maya calendar likewise turned on four cardinal points. None of these civilizations were in conversation. Yet each, on its own, reached for the same grip on how to organize the world.
This is not coincidence, and it need not be mystical. Four is likely just the most economical complexity the human mind is willing to carry: three is too thin to hold tension and contrast; five exceeds what intuition can grasp at a glance. Four is exactly enough to build a structure that can rotate, compare, and hold together on its own terms — north, south, east, west; spring, summer, autumn, winter; beginning, development, turn, and conclusion. This is the question this site keeps asking, and the answer it keeps offering: four is not a number — it is a universal lens the human mind uses to organize a complex world.

Three Kinds of Four, Three Kinds of Rigor
English
If four appears so widely across civilizations, the next question naturally follows: are all these “fours” the same thing? The answer is no. This site distinguishes three different uses of “four,” so that coincidence is never mistaken for law, and a framework is never mistaken for truth.
Historical Four — Four-part systems that genuinely existed and were recognized, within or across civilizations. The four elements, the four diagnostic methods in Chinese medicine, Heaven-Earth-Humanity-Mind — these are not frameworks imposed from outside; they were embedded in how those civilizations actually thought about the world.
Comparative Four — A four-part frame built deliberately, to let achievements from different civilizations sit side by side in honest dialogue. The purpose is not to claim equivalence, but to create a shared table where differences can be seen clearly. This site’s own comparisons — four legal traditions, four philosophical traditions — belong here.
Analytical Four — An analytical framework used to trace how human understanding advanced in a given field. “Four revolutions in humanity’s understanding of light” is an example: the “four” is a stage the researcher has identified, not a law of the universe, but scaffolding for understanding.
These three are not interchangeable. A Historical Four has the weight of actual practice behind it. A Comparative Four is a deliberate editorial choice. An Analytical Four is a tool for thinking. The site uses all three, and aims to be clear about which is which.

Three Threads, One Circle
English
These three uses of four support the site’s three main threads:
Civilizations in Conversation — traces how different civilizations grew on their own terms, and how they saw each other where their paths crossed. Four is the bridge that builds the dialogue.
Human Community — traces one species, across countless generations, in an unbroken relay of understanding. Four is the scale that marks each leap.
Vanishing Traditions — traces civilizations, crafts, and languages that are extinct, endangered, transformed, or displaced. Here, four must admit something too: not every thread gets caught whole. Forgetting is also a condition every human community shares.
Together, the three threads are not three unrelated exhibits, but one complete circle: the flourishing of civilizations meeting one another, the relay of human understanding, and the loss of what did not survive — flourishing, inheritance, and extinction together give the words “human community” their real weight.

The Civilizational Loop
English
Seen together, the three threads trace a larger cycle: a civilization forms, develops its own expression, meets other civilizations and learns from them; humanity as a whole keeps discovering and accumulating shared knowledge; some forms transform, others vanish entirely, leaving only a legacy behind. Origins & Formation, Development & Expression, Encounter & Mutual Learning, Human Discovery & Shared Knowledge, Transformation & Adaptation, Vanishing & Survival — six stages that make up a loop GreatFour keeps returning to when it looks at civilizations.
One clarification matters: this is a narrative framework, not a universal law of history. Not every civilization completes all six stages, and not always in the same order — it is simply a ruler that helps organize content, and helps readers see which stage of a civilization’s life a given article belongs to.
The Starting Point
起点
English
And the starting point for all of it remains the four original characters at the top of the homepage: They remind us that no matter how many civilizations this site studies, or how many revolutions in understanding it traces, the final measure always comes back to one particular person, finding where to place their mind, between heaven and earth.
