The Great Square of Pegasus — Autumn Sky’s Celestial Ruler

Four Stars, One Square · How East and West Read the Same Constellation
English
When you step outside on a clear autumn evening and look up, one pattern will catch your eye before any other. It is not the brightest, nor the most mythologically famous, but it is the most unmistakable: a nearly perfect square of four stars, suspended high overhead, anchoring the entire northern sky. This is the Great Square of Pegasus — one of the few celestial patterns that actually looks like what it is called.
Unlike most constellations, which require significant imagination to see animals or heroes in scattered dots, the Great Square requires none. Its four stars are of similar brightness and arranged with such geometric clarity that the eye registers it instantly as a quadrilateral. Three of its stars — Markab, Scheat, and Algenib — belong to Pegasus, the winged horse of Greek myth; the fourth, Alpheratz, belongs to Andromeda, the princess chained to a rock. This slight irregularity — a square borrowed from a neighboring constellation — makes it a “asterism” rather than a full constellation, but that only adds to its character. It is a celestial landmark shared by two stories, a meeting point of myths.
Note: Apparent magnitude is the astronomical measure of how bright a star appears from Earth. The lower the number, the brighter the star. Stars of magnitude 2 to 3 are easily visible to the naked eye — even under moderate light pollution.
The four stars range in visual magnitude from 2.1 to 2.9 — bright enough to see even under moderate urban light pollution. Their annual appearance in the autumn sky was among the most reliable signals in pre-industrial agricultural calendars. When the Great Square rose high in the evening, it marked the autumn equinox, the moment when day and night balanced and the growing season ended. For farmers, it was a signal to harvest; for seafarers navigating by stars, it was a fixed point from which to chart their course.
In the Western astronomical tradition, the Square is the body of Pegasus, the winged horse born from Medusa’s blood, later placed among the stars. Its four stars form the horse’s torso — a pattern that, once seen, is hard to unsee. The myth connects the Square to freedom, transcendence, and the human desire to rise above earthly limits.
Note: The Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions (二十八宿) is an ancient Chinese system that divides the sky into 28 segments along the moon’s path, used for calendrical and astrological purposes.
In traditional Chinese star lore, the Square is read differently. These four stars belong to the “Shi” (Encampment) and “Bi” (Wall) mansions within the Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions system, collectively known as the “celestial library wall.” The square was not a horse but the boundary of a cosmic archive — a structure enclosing the accumulated wisdom of heaven. This reading emphasizes order, preservation, and the transmission of knowledge rather than transcendence and release.
The same four stars, two readings: one culture sees a horse in flight, another sees a library wall. Neither interpretation is more “correct” than the other. Together, they suggest something about the number four itself — that it serves across civilizations as a natural container for order, whether the order of flight or the order of knowledge. The Great Square does not tell us what to think. It asks us to notice that we think in fours.

This is the first in Great Four’s “Four Cosmic Orders” series, focusing on the Great Square of Pegasus as a natural four-fold geometric structure in the sky, and how Eastern and Western civilizations have drawn different meanings from the same star pattern.
