The Four Pilgrims

Tang Sanzang, Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, Sha Wujing · Four Aspects of the Human Psyche on the Road to Self-Completion

English

Journey to the West is, on the surface, an adventure story: a Buddhist monk and his three supernatural companions travel from Tang dynasty China to India to retrieve sacred scriptures. Excluding the White Dragon Horse, there are four core figures in this pilgrimage team. Beneath the surface, it crafts a timeless allegory for the layers of human nature.

The four pilgrims are not merely separate characters — they stand for distinct facets of one complete human spirit. Tang Sanzang embodies unshakable purpose; Sun Wukong embodies boundless power; Zhu Bajie embodies earthly desire; Sha Wujing embodies quiet persistence. The journey to the west is equally a journey inward to reconcile all parts of ourselves.

Tang Sanzang — The Weight of Purpose

English
Loosely modeled after the historical monk Xuanzang, Tang Sanzang is the group’s most powerless traveler. He wields no magic, falls captive to demons time and again, and cannot distinguish evil disguise from goodness — most famously, he banishes Sun Wukong three times after the Monkey King slays the shapeshifting White Bone Demon.

Yet he is the heart of the pilgrimage. Without his unswerving resolve to fetch the scriptures, the journey would never begin. His strength lies not in ability, but in steady direction: pure, unyielding devotion to a greater calling, even when that devotion leans toward naivety or blind mercy. Purpose without power is helpless. Power without purpose carries far greater danger.

Sun Wukong — Power and Its Growth

English
The Monkey King Sun Wukong ranks among literature’s most vivid creations. Born from a celestial stone, he masters seventy-two transformations and travels one hundred and eight thousand li with a single somersault cloud, once daring to challenge the authority of heaven itself.

The golden circlet Guanyin places upon his head is the book’s central symbol of untamed power finding its proper place. It is not merely a punishment, but a quiet question every gifted soul must face: how can extraordinary talent turn toward meaningful creation, rather than reckless destruction? The havoc in Heaven shows Wukong’s power unbound; the road west teaches him where his strength truly belongs.

Zhu Bajie — The Pilgrim of Desire

English
Sun Wukong is undoubtedly the most beloved hero for most readers, yet Zhu Bajie may strike deeper resonance with ordinary people. Lazy, gluttonous, lustful, cowardly and vain, he repeatedly daydreams of abandoning the journey to return to his peaceful life in Gao Village, casually breaking Buddhist precepts without shame.

Still, he is irreplaceable. A pilgrimage without Bajie would be a hollow fantasy, one that pretends human beings hold no earthly cravings. His constant urge to quit, his endless hunger and fear, lay bare ordinary humanity’s weaknesses. He stumbles time after time yet keeps walking forward — this quiet persistence amid temptation carries its own form of heroism.

Sha Wujing — The Discipline of Showing Up

English
Once a river demon, Sha Wujing is easy to overlook, yet arguably an irreplaceable member of the journey. He possesses no dazzling magic, no lively humor, no stirring spiritual aura. His only task is carrying the luggage, rushing to call Sun Wukong whenever their master is captured. He does not solve crises, but stands witness through every hardship.

Sha Wujing embodies the unglamorous virtue of consistent devotion. Long journeys rarely rely on grand heroism or sudden epiphanies; far more often, they demand quiet, uncomplaining presence, day after day. This kind of steadfastness is no lesser virtue — it is the foundation that lets all other strengths take shape. Worth noting is the White Dragon Horse, who bears the monk through every mountain and river, enduring hardship without a single word of complaint; in a sense, the steed bears even deeper silence and forbearance than Sha Wujing.

The Destination Is Wholeness

English
The journey concludes in the Western Paradise: scriptures retrieved, pilgrims granted sacred rank, the outer mission fulfilled. Yet the novel’s deeper ending lies within each traveler: the gradual harmonization of purpose, power, desire, and persistence into one balanced, complete self.

Human nature is never single-sided; we all carry longing, fear, ambition and endurance within ourselves. We cannot erase our earthly cravings, laziness and weakness, nor should we pretend they do not exist. The pilgrimage is a mirror of mortal life: we learn to face the shadow side of ourselves honestly, and let the noble part of human nature guide our steps forward. It is not about forcing different sides of ourselves to merge perfectly, but to reconcile all inner voices and walk steadily toward inner wholeness.

Postscript: The Silent White Dragon Horse

English
We often speak of four pilgrims, yet the White Dragon Horse is the fifth quiet traveler bound to the journey. Transformed from a prince of the dragon clan, he shoulders the most mundane, endless labor: carrying Tang Sanzang across deserts, mountains and torrential rivers for fourteen years. He never quarrels, never complains, never demands attention, and rarely speaks a word throughout the whole novel. If Sha Wujing stands for quiet persistence, the White Dragon Horse carries that endurance to an even deeper extreme. He is the unspoken, invisible sacrifice hidden beneath the grand allegory of human nature.
