Four Tones of Classical Chinese
两套“四声”的渊源、差异与入声之谜
Ping, Shang, Qu, Ru — and What They Tell Us About Sound, Poetry, and Time
English
Many Chinese speakers grow up learning the four tones of modern Mandarin — first tone, second tone, third tone, fourth tone. When they first encounter the classical four tones — ping, shang, qu, ru — confusion often follows. Two systems, both called “four tones,” yet structured differently. This article examines the relationship between the two systems, their divergences, and what their differences reveal about language, poetry, and the historical evolution of Chinese speech.

很多中国人从小只学普通话的一二三四声。第一次接触「平上去入」古四声时,往往一时难以分清——两套都叫“四声”,体系却完全不同。本文先理清二者的传承关系与核心区别,再把入声的消亡、南北语音的分化、以及读古诗时的现实差异讲清楚,重点拆解一个常被误解的观点:普通话是标准汉语,南方方言只是地方土话;但从古汉语音韵的角度看,粤语、闽南语等南方方言反而更贴近唐朝的原始发音。
Two Systems, Two Logics — First, Let’s Clarify Each One
两套“四声”体系 – 先各自说清楚
English
1. The Classical Four Tones (Ping, Shang, Qu, Ru)
The classical four-tone system emerged during the Wei and Jin periods and was codified in the Sui and Tang dynasties. It is the phonological foundation of Tang poetry, Song ci, and classical literary Chinese — the sound system that governed the literature that defined Chinese civilization for over a millennium.
The four tones were described as follows:
Ping — the level tone: long, even, sustained, without rise or fall. A sound that moves in a straight line.
Shang — the rising tone: pitch rises, the tone bends upward, with a quality of incompleteness.
Qu — the departing tone: pitch falls, heavy and crisp, finishing decisively.
Ru — the entering tone: uniquely short, ending abruptly with a stop consonant (-p, -t, or -k) that cannot be lengthened.
For the purposes of poetry, the four tones were grouped into two categories: ping (level) and ze (oblique). Ze included shang, qu, and ru — all tones that were not level, that carried a turning, stopping, or abrupt quality. This binary distinction formed the rhythmic backbone of classical Chinese poetry.
2. The Modern Mandarin Four Tones (First, Second, Third, Fourth)
The modern Mandarin tone system emerged from the northern dialects during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. It represents a significant simplification of the classical system: the entering tone was entirely eliminated, leaving only three classical tone categories to be redistributed into four modern tones.
First tone (high, flat): derived from one branch of the classical ping tone.
Second tone (rising): derived from the other branch of classical ping.
Third tone (dipping-rising): largely inherited from classical shang, though the contour changed.
Fourth tone (falling): directly inherited from classical qu.

The Lineage — How the Classical Became Modern
传承关系 – 古四声如何变成普通话四声
English
The relationship between the two systems is not one of separate invention, but of simplification and reorganization. The classical four tones — ping, shang, qu, ru — were the complete set. Modern Mandarin dropped ru entirely, then split ping into two (first and second tones), while shang and qu were retained with modified contours as third and fourth tones.
The lost ru characters underwent what phonologists call ru pai san sheng (入派三声) — they were redistributed across the three remaining tones according to phonological rules. The result: a single classical ru character can end up in any of the four modern tones, with no trace of its original abruptness.
A few examples:
Hei (黑) — classical ru, modern first tone.
Bai (白) — classical ru, modern second tone.
Bai (百) — classical ru, modern third tone.
Liu (六) — classical ru, modern fourth tone.
One classical tone, scattered across all four modern ones. The original short, stopped pronunciation is completely invisible in Mandarin.

Four Core Differences — Two Systems, Four Divergences
四大核心差异 – 两套体系,四个不同
English
1. Completeness. The classical four tones form a complete phonological system — level, rising, falling, and abrupt. Mandarin has lost the abrupt tone entirely and also altered the shape of the rising tone, reducing the range of available sounds.
2. Aesthetic Function. Both systems distinguish word meaning by tone. But the classical system also served as the foundation of poetic prosody — the alternation of ping and ze created rhythm. Mandarin, lacking ru, cannot fully reproduce that rhythmic structure.
3. Length. In classical Chinese, ping, shang, and qu were long tones; ru was obligatorily short. In Mandarin, all tones can be lengthened freely.
4. Final Consonants. The classical ru ended in stop consonants (-p, -t, -k) — a momentary closure of the mouth that gave the syllable its abrupt character. Mandarin has no such endings.
中文
The Great Divergence — North and South
关键分水岭 – 南北走向两条不同的路
English
Why did Mandarin lose the entering tone while southern dialects preserved it? The answer lies in history.
The northern plains, repeatedly invaded and settled by non-Chinese-speaking peoples from the steppe, underwent centuries of linguistic simplification. The Yuan dynasty, with its capital in the north, accelerated the shift. By the time the Ming and Qing dynasties established Beijing as the political center, the northern dialects had lost the entering tone entirely.
In the south, mountain ranges and relative geographical isolation protected the languages from the same degree of outside influence. Cantonese, Hokkien, Wu, and Hakka preserved the classical four-tone system largely intact — including the full set of -p, -t, -k final stops. When a Cantonese speaker reads a Tang poem, they are hearing something much closer to what the original poet heard than a Mandarin speaker ever can.

What This Means for Poetry
这对诗歌意味着什么
English
The ru tone — short, sharp, abruptly cut off — was a crucial resource for Tang poets. Its brevity created contrast, tension, and emphasis. A line with several ru characters read with a different texture than one without.
Consider a famous line from Li He’s poem Song of the Goose Gate Garrison:
“Hei yun ya cheng cheng yu cui”
黑云压城城欲摧
The character 黑 (black) is a classical ru character — an abrupt, emphatic syllable. In Mandarin, it is pronounced hēi, first tone, a long even sound. The sudden punch of the original is gone. In Cantonese, it retains its abrupt, stopped quality — hak, with a final -k that cuts the sound short. The poet’s intended emphasis survives.
This is not a judgment on Mandarin. It is simply a fact: Mandarin is a modern standard designed for communication. The southern dialects preserve a sound system that is closer to what the Tang poets heard and used.

The Character of the Four Tones — A Deeper Look
四声的性格 – 再深入一层
English
The four tones of classical Chinese are described in traditional poetics with a precision that is almost musical. Ping is long, even, and sustained: a sound that moves in a straight line, associated with smoothness, openness, and the quality of things complete in themselves. Shang moves upward, questioning, incomplete. Qu falls, resolves, concludes. Ru is short, sharp, clipped — a sound of sudden arrest.
These four tonal qualities were not merely linguistic facts; they were aesthetic resources. Chinese poets worked with the contrast between ping (level) tones and the three ze (oblique) tones — shang, qu, and ru — the way Western composers work with major and minor keys. The alternation of tonal categories across a poem’s lines created a rhythmic and sonic texture that was inseparable from the poem’s meaning.
For Western Readers, and for Anyone Unfamiliar with the Classical Tones
对西方读者,以及所有不熟悉古四声的人
English
For a speaker of a non-tonal language, the Chinese tonal system can be the most cognitively demanding feature of language learning — not because the tones are technically difficult to produce, but because the brain must learn to treat tonal variation, which it has always processed as emotional or expressive information, as semantic information instead. The restructuring required is fundamental. This is also why the tones of Chinese carry a beauty that is difficult to explain to someone who has not experienced it: when the tonal system becomes automatic — when you no longer have to think about tones because they have become part of how you hear — Chinese speech acquires a musical quality that is genuinely pleasing. The four tones are not an obstacle to meaning; they are an additional dimension of meaning, one that adds a layer of sonic structure to the language that non-tonal languages simply do not have.

English
The classical four tones — ping, shang, qu, ru — were the complete sound system of medieval Chinese, the foundation of Tang poetry and the literary tradition that followed. The modern Mandarin four tones are a simplified descendant — a system that dropped the entering tone entirely and redistributed its characters across the remaining tones.
Mandarin and southern dialects are not different versions of the same thing. They are branches that diverged. Mandarin, shaped by centuries of northern linguistic change, is the standard of modern communication. Cantonese, Hokkien, Wu, and Hakka preserve something older — a sound system that still carries the abrupt, stopped syllables that gave Tang poetry its unique texture.
This is not a value judgment. It is a historical fact. Standard does not equal ancient. Familiar does not equal original. And when we read a Tang poem in Mandarin, we are reading a translation of the sound — not always the sound itself.
