Four Great Assassins of Ancient China
Zhuan Zhu, Yao Li, Nie Zheng, Jing Ke · One Life That Shook the World, the Boundary Between Righteousness and Violence
English
The four figures in this article — Zhuan Zhu, Yao Li, Nie Zheng, and Jing Ke — are catalogued in Sima Qian’s Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji) under the title Cike Liezhuan (Assassins’ Biographies), but the term cike carries connotations that the English word “assassin” misses. Sima Qian treats these men with profound respect, not as criminals but as practitioners of yi — a concept usually translated as righteousness or duty, but more precisely describing a sense of moral obligation arising from personal bond and recognition. They do not kill for money. They kill because they have given their word, because they have been seen and valued as persons rather than tools, because they believe no other instrument can reach the justice they are trying to achieve. The central question their stories raise is not whether political violence can be justified, but what it means, in the specific historical context of pre-Qin China, to give one’s life to something one believes in completely.

Zhuan Zhu — A Sword in the Fish
English
Zhuan Zhu was engaged by Prince Guang of Wu (later King Helv) to assassinate the reigning King Liao. To gain access, he trained for months as a chef specializing in fish preparation — a cover that gave him proximity to the king. At a banquet, he produced a concealed dagger from within a presented fish and killed King Liao, dying himself within seconds at the hands of the guards. His story is the most operationally clean of the four: a commission accepted, a task executed, a death anticipated and accepted. What Sima Qian emphasizes is not the violence but the preparation — the months of craft, the prior arrangement for his family’s welfare — marking this as a knowing, considered choice rather than an impulsive act.

Yao Li — Sacrifice Beyond Endurance
English
Yao Li’s story is the most morally disturbing of the four. To gain the trust of Qing Ji — the fugitive son of the assassinated King Liao, who would have recognized any envoy of Helv — Yao Li and King Helv devised a plan: Helv would publicly cut off Yao Li’s right hand and kill his wife and children, creating a credible grievance that would allow Yao Li to approach Qing Ji as a fellow victim of the king’s cruelty. The plan worked. Yao Li earned Qing Ji’s trust and killed him. Then, unable to live with what he had done to his family, he killed himself.
The moral accounting here is left deliberately open by the narrative tradition. Qing Ji’s dying words — admiring the assassin’s courage and ordering his release — add a layer of chivalric recognition across the moment of death. Yao Li’s subsequent suicide registers his own acknowledgment that he had exceeded the bounds of what could be morally survived. This is not presented as resolution but as record: some things that people do in the service of a cause leave no way back, and the tradition is honest enough to say so.

Source Note: Yao Li’s story appears primarily in the Wu Yue Chunqiu (Spring and Autumn of Wu and Yue), not in Sima Qian’s Shiji. The grouping of these four figures as “the four great assassins” reflects later popular tradition rather than the Shiji‘s own structure. The above analysis draws on the Wu Yue Chunqiu account, read in light of the Shiji‘s broader treatment of the assassin figure.
Nie Zheng — The Unnamed Hero
English
Nie Zheng was a butcher who had killed a man and fled. A retainer of the state of Han, Yan Zhongzi, sought him out, not to hire a weapon but — as Nie Zheng understood it — to recognize him: to see and value him as a person rather than a tool. Nie Zheng refused immediate payment, saying only that when circumstances permitted, he would repay the recognition. After his mother’s death and his sister’s marriage had freed him from family obligations, he went alone to the state of Han, entered the prime minister’s compound with a single sword, killed the minister Xia Lei, and then — to prevent his sister from being identified as his kin — destroyed his own face before dying.
Nie Zheng’s choice to die unrecognized is one of the Shiji‘s most striking moral gestures. In a culture that valued posthumous fame intensely, he deliberately erased the possibility of it in order to protect the one person he cared about. His sister, who recognized her brother’s anonymous body anyway and refused to deny him, stands as the story’s unacknowledged other hero.

Jing Ke — The Most Famous Failure
English
Jing Ke’s mission in 227 BCE — to assassinate Ying Zheng, King of Qin (the future Qin Shi Huang), on behalf of the state of Yan — failed. He concealed a dagger in a rolled map presented as tribute, was detected at the critical moment, wounded the king but could not kill him, and died in the throne room. The expansion of Qin proceeded on schedule. Historically, his action changed nothing.
What survived was the farewell. At the Yi River, before departure, his companion Gao Jianli struck the zhu (a string instrument) and Jing Ke sang: “The wind blows cold, the Yi River chills — the warrior departs and will not return.” These two lines have been spoken, sung, written, and thought by Chinese people in moments of irreversible departure for more than two thousand years. Sima Qian’s decision to give Jing Ke full biographical treatment — equal to great generals and statesmen — is itself a philosophical statement: in Sima Qian’s historiography, history belongs not only to those who succeed. Some ways of failing deserve permanent memory.

The Four Assassins in Dialogue with Assassination as a Global Historical Phenomenon
English
The act of assassination by individuals is not a phenomenon unique to ancient China. Brutus and the Senate conspirators killed Julius Caesar in 44 BCE to defend the Republic — a political motivation, not a personal one. The medieval Nizari Ismaili faction (the historical basis for the word assassin, from hashshashin) developed targeted killing as a systematic political instrument across the Islamic world. Lincoln, Gandhi, Kennedy, Sadat — each assassination triggered fundamental questions about political change and the limits of violence. The question all these cases share: when conventional means of redress seem exhausted, does giving one’s life to force a political outcome constitute heroism, tragedy, or crime?
In the pre-Qin texts, the emphasis falls on the purity of the motive, on whether the person acts from yi (righteousness rooted in genuine relationship) or from self-interest. This emphasis is a record of how these acts were understood in their time, not a universal answer to the question of political violence. The record is incomplete. But it preserves a way of asking the question that is worth remembering.
