Christianity: Origins, Divisions, and Civilizational Impact
English
Christianity began in first-century Palestine with the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, and spread from that single point across two millennia to become one of the world’s largest religious traditions. Broad academic estimates place its total adherents between 2 billion and 2.3 billion, distributed across every continent. Its influence on Western civilization — on art, music, architecture, law, philosophy, science, and daily social organization — is pervasive and inseparable from European cultural evolution in many respects. This overview reviews Christianity from cultural and historical dimensions, without doctrinal judgment or religious proselytization.

Origins and Early Expansion
English
Christianity emerged within the context of Second Temple Judaism. Jesus of Nazareth, a Jewish preacher active in the Galilee region, gathered followers around a message of the coming kingdom of God, ethical repentance, and love of neighbor. After his crucifixion by Roman authorities around 30–33 CE, his followers proclaimed his resurrection, and the movement gradually expanded beyond its Jewish origins.
The decisive figure in this expansion was Paul of Tarsus, a diaspora Jew and Roman citizen who, after a transformative religious experience, became the most influential missionary of early Christianity. His epistles — letters to newly founded Christian communities across the eastern Mediterranean — shaped the theological vocabulary of the faith and articulated its universal mission. By the end of the first century, Christian communities had been established in major cities from Jerusalem to Rome, forming a network across the Roman Empire.

From Persecution to Recognition: The Christianization of the Roman World
English
For its first three centuries, Christianity existed as a marginal and occasionally persecuted minority within the Roman Empire. Its refusal to participate in imperial cults and its monotheistic exclusivism put it at odds with the polytheistic civic religion of Rome. Periodic persecutions — most notably under emperors Decius and Diocletian — sought to suppress the movement, but these efforts failed to halt its growth.
The turning point came in 313 CE, when Emperor Constantine, together with his co-emperor Licinius, issued the Edict of Milan, granting religious tolerance to Christianity throughout the empire. Constantine himself became a patron of the faith, and by the end of the fourth century, under Emperor Theodosius I (379–395 CE), Christianity had been established as the state religion of the Roman Empire. This transformation from persecuted sect to imperially favored faith fundamentally reshaped the relationship between religious authority and political power in Western history.

The Great Divisions: East and West, Reform and Response
English
The history of Christianity is marked by two major divisions that shaped its denominational landscape. The first, the Great Schism of 1054, formally divided Christianity into the Eastern Orthodox Church, centered in Constantinople, and the Roman Catholic Church, centered in Rome. The split reflected centuries of accumulating theological, liturgical, and political tensions — disagreements over papal authority, the wording of the Nicene Creed, and the cultural divergence between the Greek-speaking East and the Latin-speaking West.
The second major division occurred in the sixteenth century with the Protestant Reformation. Initiated by Martin Luther’s 95 Theses in 1517, the Reformation challenged the authority of the papacy and many practices of the Catholic Church, emphasizing salvation by faith alone and the authority of Scripture over ecclesiastical tradition. The movement splintered Western Christendom into numerous Protestant denominations — Lutheran, Reformed, Anglican, Anabaptist, and others — while the Catholic Church responded with its own reform movement, the Counter-Reformation, which reaffirmed Catholic doctrine while addressing institutional abuses.

Shaping Western Civilization: Art, Architecture, and Learning
English
Christianity’s impact on Western art and architecture is immeasurable. From the early Christian basilicas and Byzantine mosaics to the soaring Gothic cathedrals of the High Middle Ages, the faith provided both the patronage and the symbolic vocabulary for some of the most monumental works of Western visual culture. The cathedral — as architectural form, as civic landmark, and as spiritual symbol — became one of the defining achievements of medieval European civilization.
In music, the Christian tradition gave rise to Gregorian chant, polyphony, and the oratorio, shaping the development of Western musical notation and compositional practice. In literature, the Bible itself — in its Latin Vulgate, Greek Septuagint, and vernacular translations — became the foundational text of European letters, influencing writers from Dante and Milton to Tolstoy and Dostoevsky.
The medieval universities of Europe — Oxford, Cambridge, Paris, Bologna — centered on theology, law, and medicine as core disciplines. The earliest foundations were Bologna (1088), Paris (c. 1090), and Oxford (c. 1096). While Paris and Oxford became renowned for philosophy and theology, Bologna gained distinction for its schools of law and medicine. Theology formed the most mature research system in many of these institutions, and the rational inquiry and standardized academic frameworks cultivated there laid the foundation of modern scholarship.

Christianity and the Scientific Revolution
English
The Scientific Revolution of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries unfolded within a predominantly Christian intellectual environment. The Christian worldview — with its emphasis on a created order that is rational, intelligible, and governed by consistent laws — provided conceptual groundwork for early scientific exploration. Thinkers such as Johannes Kepler and Isaac Newton saw their scientific work as a form of understanding God’s creation, and their pursuit of natural knowledge was often motivated by religious conviction.
At the same time, the relationship between church authorities and new scientific theories was often fraught with tension. The case of Galileo Galilei — who was tried by the Roman Inquisition in 1633 for advocating the Copernican heliocentric model — stands as the most famous example of conflict between ecclesiastical authority and emerging science. The church’s endorsement of the Aristotelian-Ptolemaic geocentric system, which it had integrated with its theology, put it in opposition to the new astronomy. This conflict, while not representative of the entire relationship between Christianity and science, nonetheless shaped the historical perception of their interaction.

Christianity in China: Nestorian Stele and Jesuit Encounters
English
Christianity’s presence in China dates back to the Tang dynasty. In 635 CE, a Nestorian missionary named Alopen arrived in the Tang capital Chang’an (modern Xi’an) from Persia, and was received by Emperor Taizong. The Nestorian community flourished for a time, and in 781 CE, a stone stele was erected in Chang’an to commemorate its presence — the “Nestorian Stele,” also known as the “Stele of the Propagation of the Luminous Religion in the Middle Kingdom.” Rediscovered in 1625 near Xi’an, this stele became a crucial piece of evidence for the early history of Christianity in China.
The most significant encounter between Christianity and Chinese civilization in the early modern period came through the Jesuit mission. Matteo Ricci (1552–1610), an Italian Jesuit, arrived in China in 1583 and, through his mastery of the Chinese language and classical learning, gained access to the Ming imperial court. Ricci and his fellow Jesuits introduced Western mathematics, astronomy, and cartography to China, while also translating Chinese classics into Latin and introducing Confucian thought to Europe. This period of cultural exchange — though limited in scope and cut short by later papal controversies — represented one of the most intellectually fruitful encounters between two civilizations.

English
Christianity’s two-thousand-year history is a story of remarkable expansion, profound internal transformation, and deep engagement with the cultures it encountered. From a small movement in a Roman province to a global faith spanning every continent, it has shaped — and been shaped by — the civilizations it has touched. Its contributions to art, architecture, music, philosophy, law, and science are woven into the fabric of Western civilization, while its encounters with other traditions, from Islam to Confucianism, have generated some of the most significant cross-cultural dialogues in human history. This overview has presented Christianity as a historical and cultural phenomenon — one tradition among many, each with its own complexity, each deserving of understanding on its own terms.
