Christianity began in first-century Palestine with the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, and spread from that single point across two millennia to become the world’s largest religion, with approximately 2.3 billion adherents across every continent. Its influence on Western civilization — on art, music, architecture, law, philosophy, science, and the organization of daily life — is pervasive and in many respects inseparable from the civilization itself. To understand European history, Western art, the development of international law, or the intellectual debates of the modern world without understanding Christianity is to work with a fundamental gap. This introduction presents Christianity from a cultural and historical perspective only, without doctrinal judgment or advocacy.

Jesus of Nazareth was a Jewish teacher who lived and preached in Roman-occupied Palestine in the early first century CE. His ministry lasted approximately three years; he was crucified by Roman authorities around 30 CE. His followers — initially a small community within Judaism — believed that he had risen from the dead, and this belief became the foundation of the new movement. The earliest Christian communities spread through the Jewish diaspora and the trade networks of the Roman Empire, and the religion received its most consequential early articulation from Paul of Tarsus, whose letters constitute the earliest surviving Christian writings.
The adoption of Christianity as the official religion of the Roman Empire under Constantine in the fourth century transformed a minority sect into the dominant religious institution of the Western world. The subsequent history of Christianity is one of extraordinary complexity: doctrinal disputes, institutional developments, the Great Schism of 1054 between Eastern and Western Christianity, the Protestant Reformation of the sixteenth century, and the continuing diversification of Christian traditions that has produced today’s landscape of Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, Evangelical, and many other communities.

The most visible expression of Christian civilization may be its architecture: the cathedral, developed in medieval Europe, represents one of the supreme achievements of human building — a structure designed to direct the mind upward, to embody theological ideas in stone and light, and to serve as the organizing center of an entire community’s spiritual, social, and administrative life. Notre-Dame de Paris, Chartres, Canterbury, the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople — each is a complete statement of a civilization’s relationship to the sacred, expressed in a physical form that has endured for centuries.
Christian thought shaped the development of Western philosophy, particularly through its engagement with questions about the nature of reality, the basis of morality, the relationship between reason and faith, and the meaning of history. Augustine of Hippo, Thomas Aquinas, and many others produced philosophical works of enduring importance. The universities of medieval Europe — Oxford, Cambridge, Paris, Bologna — were founded primarily as institutions for the study of theology and developed the methods of rational inquiry and institutional scholarship that became the foundations of modern academic life. The relationship between Christianity and science is complex and often misrepresented: the Scientific Revolution of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries occurred within a Christian intellectual culture and was shaped by Christian assumptions about the rationality and orderliness of nature.

Christianity reached China through the Nestorian Church in the Tang dynasty — the Nestorian Stele, erected in Chang’an in 781 CE, records the presence of a Christian community in the Tang capital. Subsequent missions by Franciscan friars, Jesuit scholars, and later Protestant missionaries brought Christianity into sustained contact with Chinese civilization. The Jesuit presence at the Ming and Qing imperial courts — figures like Matteo Ricci, who presented European science and mathematics while learning Chinese classical philosophy — represents one of the most remarkable intellectual exchanges between Eastern and Western civilization in the pre-modern period. What the encounter produced was not conversion on either side but a genuine mutual curiosity: two civilizations encountering each other’s deepest intellectual traditions with varying degrees of surprise and recognition.
