English
Mencius and Aristotle were contemporaries — both working in the fourth century BCE, in different corners of the world, without any knowledge of each other. Both asked the same fundamental question: what is virtue, where does it come from, and how does a person develop it? Their answers are different in ways that reveal something deep about the divergence between Eastern and Western ethical traditions. But their differences are also instructive in a more specific way: they are not merely different, but complementary — each illuminating something that the other leaves in shadow.

Mencius and the Four Beginnings
English
Mencius argued that human beings are born with four moral impulses — he called them duan, beginnings or sprouts — that are the seeds of virtue. The heart of compassion is the beginning of benevolence (ren). The heart of shame and aversion is the beginning of righteousness (yi). The heart of deference and yielding is the beginning of ritual propriety (li). The heart of approval and disapproval is the beginning of wisdom (zhi).
The crucial claim is that these impulses are innate — they are present in every human being from birth, not instilled by education or society. Mencius supported this with a famous thought experiment: if you suddenly see a child about to fall into a well, you will feel alarm and compassion. This feeling is immediate, prior to reflection, prior to any calculation about whether the child is known to you or whether there is advantage to be gained by saving them. The feeling simply arises. This spontaneous compassion is, for Mencius, evidence that the capacity for benevolence is built into human nature.
The project of moral education, on this view, is not to install virtue from outside but to cultivate what is already present. Mencius uses the metaphor of farming: the four sprouts are like seeds in good soil — they will grow and flourish if they receive proper tending, and they will wither if they are neglected or suppressed. The person who claims to have no capacity for goodness is like a person who has neglected their field and then concludes that nothing can grow there.

Aristotle and the Four Cardinal Virtues
English
Aristotle inherited the four cardinal virtues from Plato, who had identified them in the Republic: wisdom (sophia or phronesis), justice (dikaiosyne), courage (andreia), and temperance (sophrosyne). For Aristotle, virtue is not an impulse or a feeling but a stable disposition of character — a hexis — that is acquired through practice. We become just by doing just acts, brave by doing brave acts, temperate by doing temperate acts. Virtue is a habit, and habits are formed through repeated action.
The role of reason in this process is central. Aristotle’s concept of practical wisdom — phronesis — is the capacity to discern the right action in particular circumstances: not to apply rules mechanically, but to perceive what the situation requires and respond appropriately. This perception is itself cultivated through experience and reflection. The virtuous person is not the person who follows rules, but the person who has developed the judgment to know what to do when the rules run out.
For Aristotle, virtue lies in the mean between extremes: courage is the mean between cowardice and recklessness; generosity is the mean between miserliness and prodigality; appropriate pride is the mean between vanity and self-deprecation. The virtuous person has calibrated their responses so that they naturally hit the right mark — neither too much nor too little. This calibration is the work of a lifetime, and it is what education, properly understood, should accomplish.

The Same Question, Different Starting Points
English
Mencius and Aristotle agree on more than their different starting points might suggest. Both believe that virtue is teachable and that moral education is the most important form of education. Both believe that virtue involves the proper ordering of emotion and reason — that the virtuous person not only does the right thing but feels the right way about doing it. Both believe that moral perception — the ability to see what a situation requires — is central to ethical life. And both identify four virtues as the core of their account.
What they disagree about is the direction of the arrow. For Mencius, virtue flows outward from an inner goodness that is already present: the project is cultivation, drawing out what is there. For Aristotle, virtue flows inward from outer practice: the project is construction, building what is not yet there through repeated action. Both visions describe real processes — both cultivation and construction are genuinely involved in moral development — which may be why both traditions have continued to find adherents who recognize something true in them.
The question that remains open — and that this compendium leaves to the reader — is whether the two traditions are ultimately saying the same thing about human nature in different vocabularies, or whether they represent genuinely different views about what human beings fundamentally are. Are we born good and in need of development, or born neutral and in need of formation? The answer matters — not just philosophically, but for everything from how we raise children to how we design institutions to how we think about moral failure. Two civilizations gave different answers. Both answers are still very much alive.
