Four Great Awakenings: Humanity’s Leaps to Understand Life
From Cataloguing Life to Reading the Book of Life
English
What is life? How do living things grow, reproduce and fade away? These are fundamental questions every civilization has asked again and again.
In the ancient world, peoples across regions observed plants and animals, documented medicinal herbs, and noted the habits of living creatures. Chinese materia medica texts, natural-history writings from ancient Greece, observations from ancient India and the Arabic world circulated across continents, building large bodies of empirical knowledge. These generations-old observations formed fertile ground for the later birth of life science.
Breakthroughs in life science are not the achievement of isolated geniuses. They are collective outcomes built by observers, healers, craftspeople and experimenters across regions and centuries. Human understanding of life unfolded in four major awakenings. Step by step, humanity moved beyond surface appearances toward the deepest secrets of living beings.

First Awakening — Documenting the Diversity of Life
English
In remote antiquity, human understanding of living things was wrapped in myth and magic. The origins of creatures were mostly explained through creation legends.
As farming, herbal gathering and hunting practices advanced, ancient peoples began systematic recording and classification of plants and animals. Successive Chinese materia medica works described plant forms, habitats and properties in detail. Aristotle and his successors systematically studied hundreds of animal species. Scholars in ancient India and the Arabic world compiled voluminous natural-history texts.
Instead of explaining nature purely through myth, human communities relied on direct observation: naming, distinguishing and cataloguing countless living forms. This first awakening established a core insight: life can be observed, recorded and classified. Humans drew the first rough map of the living world, laying foundations for all later inquiry.

Second Awakening — Discovering the Cell: The Fundamental Unit of Life
English
For thousands of years, humans could only study life with the naked eye. The microscopic realm stayed hidden; how bodies functioned internally remained a profound puzzle.
The invention of the microscope unlocked the invisible miniature world. Researchers peering through lenses noticed tiny compartment-like structures in plant tissues and named them cells. Through successive observation, comparison and argument, cell theory took shape: all plants and animals, no matter how different in outward form, are built from cells. The activities of life are fundamentally the activities of cells.
Human perception descended from visible organisms down to invisible microscopic building-blocks. This awakening revealed: all complex life shares the same basic microscopic building-blocks. A shared underlying structure connects the immense diversity of living beings.

Third Awakening — Grasping the Narrative of Biological Evolution
English
For a very long time, people widely believed species were fixed and unchanging, created in their present-day forms from the very beginning.
Naturalists from across the globe travelled across continents and islands, gathering specimens, comparing fossils, and documenting similarities and differences among species. Mounting field evidence eventually gave rise to evolutionary theory, most famously articulated by Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace in the mid-19th century. Life is not static. Species transform over time, diversify and multiply shaped by environmental pressures, generating Earth’s rich biological variety.
Evolutionary theory wove together the shared past of all living things. Humanity gained a unified framework to understand where species came from, why creatures differ yet bear marks of kinship. This represented an enormous intellectual shift: life carries a shared history and exists within an ever-changing continuum.

Fourth Awakening — Decoding DNA: The Genetic Script of Life
English
Cells explained life’s building-blocks, and evolution accounted for life’s long-term transformation. Yet one central riddle remained unsolved: how do traits pass down through generations? What substance carries biological information from parents to offspring?
Through collaborative work by scientists from multiple nations — most notably James Watson, Francis Crick, Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins — the double-helix structure of DNA was revealed in 1953. Humans learned that deoxyribonucleic acid carries full hereditary information. Combinations of its four nucleotide bases write the complete blueprint for every living organism. In following decades, humans read gene sequences and undertook genome-scale sequencing, gradually gaining the ability to interpret life’s underlying molecular instructions.
This fourth awakening brought humanity face-to-face with life’s informational core. No longer limited to outward appearances or long-term histories, we could begin to read the molecular text in which life itself is written.

Conclusion
结语
English
Recording nature’s diversity, discovering the cell, grasping evolution, and decoding genetic code: these four awakenings mark humanity’s layered unveiling of life’s mysteries.
This is not the triumph of a small handful of individuals. It is the cumulative quest of generations of observers across the globe, building upon ancient natural-history traditions from many civilizations. Human exploration of life is far from complete; countless puzzles remain unanswered. These four great leaps stand as essential stepping-stones toward understanding ourselves and all living things on Earth.
