Four Great Breakthroughs: Humanity’s Steps Toward Deep Space
From the Atmosphere to Interstellar Space · How Humanity Stepped Beyond Earth
English
Gazing toward the stars is an impulse shared by every ancient civilization. Generations of observers in China, Arabia, ancient Greece and India charted constellations, tracked celestial movements and mapped paths of sun and moon. These geographically separated astronomical observations built up bodies of mathematics, observational knowledge and engineering insight, planting intellectual seeds for journeys into space. For millions of years humanity remained confined beneath Earth’s atmosphere. The stars could only be admired from afar, never reached.
Space exploration is never the exclusive achievement of any single nation. It stands as the cross-generational collective work of countless craftspeople, mathematicians, astronomers and engineers, belonging to humanity as a whole. Along the long road toward the stars, four landmark breakthroughs successively broke the boundaries of human existence, extending civilization’s reach deeper into the cosmos.

First Breakthrough — Beyond the Atmosphere: Human Life Enters Outer Space
English
For millennia, life was firmly confined to planetary surfaces and beneath the atmosphere. No one could say for certain whether flesh-and-blood beings could survive within the vacuum and radiation of outer space.
In 1957, humanity’s first artificial satellite reached orbit. For the first time, a human-built object escaped Earth’s atmospheric shell and entered cosmic space. Only a few years later, in 1961, humanity’s first space-traveller completed an orbital flight around Earth. A living human briefly left planetary shelter and beheld the blue home-planet hanging against dark void.
The significance lies not merely in spacecraft hardware, but in a civilizational confirmation: humans are no longer merely surface-dwelling creatures. Life can leave the atmosphere and persist within space. For the first time, human civilization crossed the bounds of earthly confinement.

Second Breakthrough — Setting Foot on an Alien World
English
Orbiting close to Earth still kept humanity within Earth’s gravitational embrace. All human footprints remained near home. To depart Earth and stand upon another celestial body represented the next great test for civilization.
In 1969, human footsteps touched the surface of the Moon for the very first time. Up to that moment, all human history, reproduction, conflict and creation unfolded solely upon one blue planet. Long present only in myth, poetry and star-charts, the Moon became real ground for humans to stand upon.
The globally known phrase “one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind” represents the fulfilment of millennia-old human stargazing. It proved humanity could depart its home-world and arrive at another celestial body. Civilization was no longer limited to a single planet.

Third Breakthrough — Leaving the Earth-Moon System for the Depths of the Solar System
English
The Moon still lies inside the Earth-Moon system. To reach true deep space required escaping Earth-Moon gravity and travelling toward far-off planetary worlds.
In 1977, two probes set off on their long voyage. No longer tasked with Earth-orbital or lunar round-trip missions, their destination lay at the outer reaches of the Solar System. They flew past Jupiter and Saturn, then onward toward Uranus and Neptune, returning images and environmental data humanity had never before imagined.
No human astronauts travelled aboard them, yet human perception, instruments and cultural markers were sent beyond the Earth-Moon sphere. Humanity’s frontier of exploration expanded from the near-Earth neighbourhood into the vast expanse of the Solar System.

Fourth Breakthrough — Crossing the Heliopause: Entering Interstellar Space
English
The Solar System forms an enormous bubble where solar wind meets interstellar medium: the heliopause, marking the boundary of the Sun’s sphere of influence. To pass this threshold is to truly leave the Solar System and enter the vast void between stars.
After decades-long flight, human-built probes finally crossed the heliopause, becoming the first man-made objects to arrive in interstellar space. Carrying sounds and portraits of Earth, they drift onward toward the endless depths of the Milky Way.
Human-crewed flight beyond the Solar System remains unaccomplished to this day. Yet human-made artefacts have already made that crossing. This represents a civilizational breakout: human information, memory and scientific observation have escaped the Sun’s gravitational bubble and touched the Milky Way itself.

Conclusion
结语
English
Breaking through the atmosphere, landing upon an alien world, exiting the Earth-Moon system, and arriving in interstellar space: these four milestones trace humanity’s outward journey.
This is not primarily a story of national rivalry. It is an expedition built generation upon generation, drawing upon ancient astronomical traditions from many civilizations. Earth is humanity’s cradle, yet humanity cannot remain forever in its cradle. These four breakthroughs are only a beginning. Deep-space exploration for the whole human community continues onward.
