Information & Knowledge
The Carriers of Knowledge and the Vessels of Memory
English
Human memory lives outside the human head. That, itself, is an invention: moving knowledge from one mind to a place where anyone can reach it. This column follows the carriers of knowledge——how they evolved, flourished, and sometimes failed. It is about libraries lost to fire, the printing press that enabled scale, and the archives that hold what survived. Its division of labour with “Cognitive Meta” is clear: this column covers the technology of recording; the latter covers forgetting and rediscovery as cognitive phenomena.
