Physics asks the most elementary and most elusive questions: why does something move? What is light? What is heat? It took millennia to turn the answers into equations. This column does not catalogue formulas. It tracks the moments when the question itself was replaced.

Before Newton, motion required a continuous push; after Newton, rest and motion were merely two states of the same thing. The thread continues through energy, electromagnetism, and the discovery of fields.
