Four Countenances – Wall of Minds That Shape Our Time | Great Four 四相

四相
Four Countenances

A small room, four faces, looking at one another in pairs

English

A small room, four faces, looking at one another in pairs. What is left empty in the middle is, perhaps, the real subject under discussion — the questions still unsettled, surrounded from four directions by four postures. This is not an arbitrary collection. The room’s geometry itself is a statement: two pairs of diagonal gazes, four abstract fulcra. It is the same logic that holds this site together — four as the architecture of thought.

Break — In Tribute to Elon Musk

English
There is a kind of person who treats the impossible as a starting point, not an ending. He places bets so large that onlookers lose sleep on his behalf, and counts the cost so lightly that others assume he never counted at all. It isn’t that he doesn’t fear losing — he has simply redefined what losing means: not a full stop, but an unfinished experiment. He works as though the rules were written to be rewritten, as though the future were not something to wait for but something to build, piece by piece, against all odds.

This posture is not new. It is one of the oldest in human memory. Prometheus stole fire from the gods, knowing full well the punishment that awaited him, and chose to hand that fire to humankind anyway. The ancient Greeks told this story not as a cautionary tale but as a founding myth — an acknowledgment that civilization itself begins with an act of transgression. Musk’s wagers on electric cars and rockets are, in a sense, that old story replaying itself: lighting something forbidden in secret, then handing it to everyone.

Yet the East tells a different story about the same impulse. The figure of the boundary-breaker in Chinese tradition is more ambiguous. The Foolish Old Man who removed the mountains was not a genius defying the gods — he was a stubborn ordinary man, and the gods moved the mountains for him only after they saw his persistence. The emphasis falls on patience, not audacity; on continuity, not rupture. The Chinese tradition is wary of the word “transgression” itself — “going too far is as bad as not going far enough.” This difference is not a judgment; it is a tension, and it is precisely what makes the figure on this wall worth looking at: someone who embodies the Western embrace of transgression, placed within a room whose walls are lined with Chinese sensibility.

Hold — In Tribute to Ren Zhengfei

English
Another kind of person treats mere survival as something worth fighting for with everything he has. He does not chase the wind; he holds on to one thing — driving the roots deep, keeping the lifeline in his own hands. He rarely explains, because explaining is itself a kind of expenditure; he spends what strength he has on two words alone: not falling. In an age of noise, he chooses silence; in an age of shortcuts, he chooses the long road.

This too is an ancient posture. Every Chinese child grows up hearing the story of King Goujian of Yue, who slept on brushwood and tasted gall after his defeat — enduring what ordinary people could not endure, simply so that one day he might stand firmly on his own feet again. In Ren Zhengfei, something of that same spirit finds a modern echo. The Chinese tradition has a deep reservoir of resources for precisely this condition: “adversity strengthens the nation” (多难兴邦), “peril gives life to alertness; ease gives death to negligence” (生于忧患,死于安乐). Sima Qian wrote the Records of the Grand Historian from the depths of his own humiliation — not in spite of his suffering, but because of it. Survival, in this tradition, is not a passive outcome; it is an active discipline, a practice, a form of patience that outlasts empires.

The Western tradition has its own word for the same instinct — resilience: not the absence of being struck down, but the certainty of getting back up. East and West name it differently; both are pointing at the same life force. Ren Zhengfei’s insistence on technological self-reliance is that old life force, speaking in the language of semiconductors and supply chains.

Refine — In Tribute to Steve Jobs

English
A third kind of person treats “good enough” as a disgrace. He believes that if a thing cannot move someone’s heart, it does not deserve to exist. He argues over the angle of a single screw, loses sleep over the curvature of a single line — because to him, a product is never merely a product; it is an uncompromising promise made to whoever will use it. He sees what others overlook and refuses what others accept — not out of stubbornness, but out of a conviction that the smallest details carry the weight of the whole.

This lineage is the most cross-civilizational of the four. The pursuit of perfection through craft is a universal human impulse, and every major civilization has given it a name and a lineage. The East speaks of the butcher in Zhuangzi’s fable, whose blade never dulled because he understood the ox down to its last seam; of Lu Ban, the craftsman-sage who obsessed over the smallest measurements; of the Japanese shokunin — the artisan who treats each object as a sacred trust, who polishes a single surface for days because the user will touch it every day. The West speaks of Leonardo sketching an egg a hundred times, of Michelangelo tearing down and repainting the Sistine ceiling again and again for no one’s satisfaction but his own; of the German Meister tradition, of the Renaissance bottega where apprentices learned not techniques but a way of seeing.

Jobs’s near-tyrannical perfectionism belongs to all of these lineages — which perhaps only proves that the pursuit of the utmost has never been any single civilization’s property. It is simply what happens when someone refuses to let the gap between vision and reality remain unfilled.

Share — In Tribute to Lei Jun

English
A fourth kind of person is preoccupied with another question entirely: why should good things belong only to the few? He takes what is complicated and makes it simple, takes what is expensive and makes it affordable, and, little by little, lowers what once stood far above reach until ordinary hands can grasp it. This is not compromise — it is a different kind of ambition: making possession no longer a privilege, but a norm. He works not for the applause of the few, but for the quiet gratitude of the many.

This impulse, too, runs through the entire history of civilization. The Confucian principle of extending care from oneself outward — “treat the elders in your own family with the same respect you would wish for your own parents, and extend that to the elders of all families” — is the oldest Chinese articulation of this logic. The Mohist ideal of “universal love” (兼爱) proposed the same impulse in more radical terms. When Bi Sheng invented movable type in Song-dynasty China, books broke free of the nobility’s monopoly for the first time; centuries later in Europe, Gutenberg did much the same thing, freeing the Bible from the monastery and placing it in ordinary hands. East and West, it seems, arrived almost independently at the same insight: that knowledge, like any good thing, must flow downward to be fully itself.

What Lei Jun does is, in some sense, that ancient impulse surfacing again, this time in the age of the smartphone. The technology already existed; what he did was make it affordable, make it ordinary, make it something that needs no justification. That, too, is a form of creation.

Four Countenances, One Room

English
These four postures contradict one another, and complete one another. Breaking, without someone to hold the line, never quite lands. Refining, without someone to share it, ends in solitary admiration. Holding and sharing, without breaking and refining to clear the way ahead, remain, in the end, stuck where they started. Across the room, the four faces look at one another — none persuading the other, none needing to. That is what the Four Countenances are. The room itself, with its four corners and its empty center, is not a coincidence. It is the structure within which all of this can be seen.
