Across civilizations, thinkers have created typologies to account for divergences in human beings — whether rooted in bodily constitution, innate temperament, or modes of psychological cognition. Why do people respond so differently to identical events? Why does one person deliberate while another acts decisively? Why can a quality that serves one person well become a liability for another? Across cultures and centuries, thinkers have turned to typologies to explore these questions.
This article places two frameworks side by side: Carl Jung’s four psychological functions, laid out in Psychological Types (1921), and the four constitutional types of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), originating from the Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Medicine). Our approach is juxtaposition, not equivalence — observing what each framework illuminates, and where each reaches its limits.

Jung — Four Ways of Processing Reality
English
Jung argued that consciousness engages with reality through four psychological functions, arranged into two opposing pairs. Thinking and Feeling are rational functions: they evaluate and make judgments. Sensing and Intuition are irrational functions: they take in perceptions without immediate judgment.
Thinking orients through logic and causal reasoning, asking “Is this true or false?” Feeling orients through values and relational impact, asking “Is this good or bad?” Sensing anchors itself to concrete, immediate sensory facts, asking “What is actually here, right now?” Intuition grasps latent patterns and possible futures, asking “What could this become?”
Critically, Jung regarded typology not as fixed destiny but as a lifelong developmental challenge. The least-mature function — the inferior function — is both a source of vulnerability and a reservoir of growth potential. A Thinking-oriented person’s repressed Feeling function is not merely weak; it remains psychologically alive, poorly integrated, and may surface in disproportionate emotional outbursts. Psychological maturity consists in integrating all four functions, not perfecting one at the expense of others.
Jung’s ideas reached broad public audiences via the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), developed by Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers from the 1940s through the 1960s. Even so, Jung maintained a clear conceptual distance from such popularized applications. He never formally endorsed the MBTI, and his original framework cannot be neatly reduced to the well-known static four-letter identity codes. For Jung, the four functions formed a heuristic diagnostic tool for analytical psychology: a means to understand a person’s habitual orientation toward the world, not a rigid label that defines a person’s whole being. He repeatedly warned against reducing human beings to static categories, emphasizing ongoing psychological development across the lifespan, and stressed that types should only be treated as provisional analytical aids. Subsequent Jungian scholars have drawn a firm dividing line between Jung’s analytical psychology and MBTI, viewing the latter as a popular derivative, rather than a faithful rendering of Jung’s own thought.

TCM — Four Constitutional Types
English
TCM’s bodily-centered typology builds upon yin-yang dynamics to describe four primary constitutional patterns, documented in the Ling Shu chapter of the Huangdi Neijing.
The Taiyang type (predominant yang energy) is outward-directed, vigorous and action-focused, yet prone to yang excess and yin consumption. The Shaoyang type (moderate yang) is adaptable, socially nimble and quick-responding, yet susceptible to emotional volatility. The Taiyin type (predominant yin energy) is steady, inward-focused and physically resilient, yet at risk of qi-blood stagnation. The Shaoyin type (diminished both yin and yang) is sensitive and introspective, finely attuned to inner states, and requires careful nourishment.
Modern TCM scholarship has further refined constitutional theory. Most influential is Wang Qi’s nine-constitution system, which expands upon the classical four-type baseline with finer-grained categories. This represents ongoing theoretical evolution within TCM, rather than a rejection of classical foundations.
TCM constitutional typing is not primarily meant for psychological profiling. Its purpose is therapeutic and wellness guidance. Different constitutions call for tailored approaches to diet, movement, seasonal living, and emotional regulation. The framework is prescriptive, not merely descriptive.

Resonances and Differences
English
When read side by side, the two systems show superficial resonances. The outward-driven Taiyang type shares behavioral overlaps with Jung’s Sensing orientation. The sensitive, inward-leaning Shaoyin type echoes qualities found in Jung’s Intuitive function. These parallels remain metaphorical, however, not structural one-to-one mappings. The two traditions answer fundamentally different questions.
Jung asks: how does the human mind process information and experience? TCM asks: how does the human body manage energetic flow? Subject matter differs (psyche versus soma); observational methods differ (introspective psychological observation versus clinical bodily assessment); practical aims differ (psychological integration versus bodily health maintenance). Forcing them into a unified model impoverishes both traditions.

A Third Party — The Humoral Tradition
English
Hippocrates-Galen’s four-humor theory — sanguine (blood/air), phlegmatic (phlegm/water), choleric (yellow bile/fire), melancholic (black bile/earth) — predates Jung by two millennia, yet exhibits striking parallels with his four-function model. The sanguine temperament aligns loosely with extraverted Feeling; the melancholic temperament with introverted Intuition. Three independent intellectual traditions, across separate civilizations, arrived at broadly comparable human-temperament taxonomies.
This convergence opens a thought-provoking question. Do these similarities reflect real-world patterns in human mental-bodily variation — an actual four-fold tendency within human beings? Or do they reflect a built-in cognitive bias: the human mind’s preference for neat, symmetrical four-part typologies? There may be no definitive answer. Yet this is exactly the kind of question that cross-cultural comparative study is well-suited to explore.
It bears noting: these three typologies are not all “temperament theories” in the strict sense. The four-humor framework is a classic temperament doctrine; TCM four-constitution theory centers on bodily endowment with attendant behavioral traits; Jung’s four-function model describes cognitive-evaluative orientations of consciousness, not innate temperament.
