The Greek Four Loves and Chinese Conceptions of Love and Benevolence · A Cross-Civilizational Dialogue

English

Love ranks among humanity’s most universal experiences, yet it resists precise philosophical definition. It is emotion and volition simultaneously; an act of giving and a form of longing; intensely personal and inherently relational. How different civilizations categorize and theorize love reveals their foundational understandings of human nature, interpersonal bonds, and moral duty.

Ancient Greek stands out as one of the world’s most analytically nuanced languages regarding love, with four distinct terms describing separate forms: Eros (desiring love), Philia (friendship love), Storge (familial love), and Agape (unconditional love). C. S. Lewis systematized these concepts in The Four Loves (1960). Juxtaposing the Greek four loves alongside Chinese thought uncovers genuine points of convergence, alongside fruitful divergences that neither intellectual tradition could independently produce.

古希腊语对爱的辨析极为精细,以四个专有名词区分爱的不同形态:Eros(渴望之爱)、Philia(友谊之爱)、Storge(亲情之爱)、Agape(无条件之爱)。C.S.

Eros — The Love That Desires

Eros –

English
Eros springs from desire: love born of lack, reaching out toward beauty. In Plato’s Symposium, Socrates reinterprets Eros as the driving force of philosophy. Properly cultivated, the longing for beautiful bodies ascends step by step: from individual physical beauty to noble souls, virtuous practices, rational knowledge, and ultimately the contemplation of Beauty itself. Eros carries creative power precisely because it is incomplete. The lover pursues what they do not possess, and this sense of insufficiency fuels spiritual ascent.

The Chinese notion closest to Eros is qing (情): humanity’s emotional response to the world, including romantic and erotic attraction. Confucian tradition approaches qing with prudence: emotion is not inherently dangerous, yet ought to be guided by ritual and reason. Daoism adopts a more open stance: natural feelings flowing freely, without forced restraint or redirection, align with the Dao. Neither school develops Eros as an engine of epistemological ascent in the Platonic sense, yet both deeply examine how sentiments may be nurtured and where longing leads.

Philia — The Love of Friends

Philia –

English
The most thorough philosophical analysis of Philia appears in Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics. He identifies three tiers of friendship: bonds built on utility, bonds built on pleasure, and bonds built on virtue. Only the third form — mutual affection rooted in genuine character — represents friendship in its fullest meaning. Aristotle describes a true friend as “another self”: someone who shares your understanding of goodness and beauty, and sees you as you truly are.

Chinese thought attaches equal depth to friendship. Among the five ethical relationships (wulun,五伦), friendship is the only non-hierarchical, non-blood bond, sustained by xin (faithfulness). The friendship between Guan Zhong and Bao Shuya remains China’s timeless model: Bao recognised Guan’s inherent worth long before external success validated it, and supported him at personal cost. The ideal of zhiji (知己, one who truly understands you) captures this core: a person who perceives your authentic self beyond superficial appearances. This vision resonates profoundly with Aristotle’s idea of “another self”.

Philia(菲利亚)代表友谊之爱。

Storge — The Love of Belonging

Storge –

English
Storge denotes love rooted in natural belonging: affection between parents and children, siblings, arising from shared life and common identity rather than conscious choice or admiration. It is quieter than Eros, and less deliberately chosen than Philia. A parent loves their child not because of merit or excellence, but simply because the child belongs to them. This inherent unconditionality defines Storge and lends it unique moral weight.

Confucian civilisation developed one of the most systematic articulations of Storge across global history. Xiao (孝, filial piety) places love and reverence for parents at the foundation of all moral practice. Confucius states that xiao forms the root of ren; the maxim “of all virtues, filial piety comes first” reflects this priority. This framework brought tangible achievements: stable family cohesion, care for the elderly, and gratitude framed as a foundational virtue. Yet inherent tensions persist: family obligation may override individual conscience, and filial values can be instrumentalised by power. Storge and Confucian xiao share the same core essence, yet diverge sharply in institutional form and political implications.

Agape — The Love That Wills the Good

Agape –

English
Agape sets the highest standard among the four loves. In early Christian theology, it describes God’s love for humanity: unconditional, independent of the beloved’s worth, unmotivated by the lover’s own needs. Followers are called to extend this love universally, even toward enemies. It is a love of volition rather than fleeting feeling; one need not hold warm affection for another to practise Agape. First Corinthians Chapter 13 remains its most iconic expression: “Love is patient, love is kind… love never fails.”

Mozi’s jian’ai (兼愛, impartial caring) offers the closest structural parallel within Chinese thought. Mozi (c. 470–391 BCE) argued that graded affection — prioritising one’s own family and state above outsiders — is the fundamental source of conflict. Rulers favour their own realms and invade neighbouring states; household heads prioritise their kin and harm other families. His solution is impartial caring: treat others’ parents as you treat your own. Confucians offer a refined counterargument: love without rooted attachments cannot endure. The path from particular affection to universal compassion expands outward from close bonds, rather than abandoning them: extend care for one’s own parents to all parents. The debate between universal impartial love and graded natural affection remains unresolved within both traditions.

中文
Agape(阿迦佩)是四类爱中要求最高的一种。

A Fifth Love — What Ren Adds

English
Comparing the Greek four loves with Chinese thought reveals a structural asymmetry. The Greek framework classifies love horizontally, sorted by relationship type. Chinese reflections on love develop vertically, centred on cultivation and expansion: how does love extend from specific intimate bonds toward universal compassion? The most distinctive contribution from Chinese intellectual tradition to this dialogue is ren (仁).

Ren is commonly translated as benevolence or humaneness, yet neither term fully captures its depth. It is not merely one category of love, but the inner capacity that makes authentic love possible: the innate sensitivity to another person’s humanity. It serves both as the source and fruit of moral growth. It exists only within real interpersonal encounter, yet aims toward universal reach. Introducing ren completes the framework built by the four Greek loves:

Eros asks: What do I desire?

Philia asks: Whom do I trust?

Storge asks: Where do I belong?

Agape asks: Whom ought I to love?

Ren asks: Who am I, when I engage with others in genuine relationship?
Perhaps, together, these five questions begin to map the full complexity of love as human experience and philosophical inquiry.

Eros

Philia

Storge

Agape
