English

A bodhisattva — from Sanskrit bodhi (awakening) + sattva (being) — is one who has achieved or is close to achieving full enlightenment but voluntarily postpones final entry into nirvana. Bound by a vow to remain accessible to suffering beings until all are liberated, the bodhisattva embodies the highest ideal of Mahayana Buddhism: not individual liberation (the Theravada ideal of the arhat), but universal liberation, made possible through sustained compassionate presence in the world.

Chinese Buddhism settled on four great bodhisattvas, each associated with a specific sacred mountain: Manjushri at Wutai Mountain (Shanxi), Samantabhadra at Emei Mountain (Sichuan), Guanyin (Avalokiteshvara) at Putuo Mountain (Zhejiang), and Ksitigarbha at Jiuhua Mountain (Anhui). These four mountains became China’s most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites — the “Four Great Buddhist Mountains” — geographically distributed across the country’s four directions. Each bodhisattva embodies a cardinal spiritual quality; together they map the full range of what Mahayana tradition considers necessary for complete spiritual maturity.

Manjushri — The Bodhisattva of Transcendental Wisdom

English
Manjushri, “Gentle Glory” in Sanskrit, is the bodhisattva of transcendental wisdom (prajna) — not ordinary intellectual knowledge but direct insight into the true nature of all phenomena: their emptiness (sunyata), their interdependence, their freedom from the fixed, independent existence that ordinary perception attributes to them. He is depicted holding a flaming sword (which cuts through delusion and false views) and riding a lion (whose roar represents the fearless voice of wisdom). In the sutras, Manjushri regularly challenges the Buddha’s other disciples with penetrating questions that reveal deeper layers of teaching.

From a comparative perspective, one may draw parallels between Manjushri and the Greek goddess Athena — both associated with wisdom rather than emotional qualities, both carrying weapons as symbols of their domain, both representing a clarity that transcends personal attachment. But Athena is a mythological being; Manjushri is an accomplished practitioner, one who has realized wisdom through meditation and insight rather than being born into divinity. This distinction between divine nature and achieved realization is fundamental to Buddhist cosmology.

Samantabhadra — The Bodhisattva of Great Vows

English
Samantabhadra, “Universal Virtue,” embodies the transformation of wisdom into action — the commitment to make compassionate understanding actual in the world through sustained practice and vow. He is depicted riding a six-tusked white elephant (representing the power and groundedness that carry wisdom into action) and is associated with the ten great vows outlined in the Avatamsaka Sutra: (1) to honor all buddhas, (2) to praise the Tathagata, (3) to make extensive offerings, (4) to confess karmic obstacles, (5) to rejoice in others’ merits, (6) to request the turning of the Dharma wheel, (7) to request that buddhas remain in the world, (8) to always follow the Buddha’s teachings, (9) to accord with all sentient beings, and (10) to dedicate all merits to universal liberation.

Samantabhadra’s quality resonates, at the level of personal spiritual cultivation, with the Confucian principle of zhixing heyi (知行合一, the unity of knowledge and action): genuine understanding necessarily expresses itself in practice; vows that are not enacted are not genuine vows. The bodhisattva ideal in general, and Samantabhadra’s quality in particular, insists that spiritual life cannot be purely interior: it must flow outward into relationship with the world.

Guanyin — The Bodhisattva of Compassion

English
Guanyin — a Chinese abbreviation of Guanshiyin, “One Who Perceives the Sounds of the World” (Sanskrit: Avalokiteshvara) — is the most widely venerated of the four bodhisattvas in Chinese popular religion and one of the most important figures in Mahayana Buddhism globally. The Lotus Sutra‘s chapter on Guanyin describes a being of thirty-three possible manifestations, adapting its form to whatever the suffering being before it can best receive. Guanyin hears every call for help and responds.

Guanyin’s gender transformation in Chinese Buddhism is a notable case study in the history of religious transmission. Avalokiteshvara was originally depicted as male in Indian sources; by the Song dynasty (960–1279 CE), the Chinese Guanyin had become definitively female, depicted as a gracious, white-robed figure holding a willow branch and a vase of pure water. This cultural adaptation reflects the deep association, within the Chinese context, between compassion and maternal care. Cross-cultural parallels with the Virgin Mary — both female, both compassionate, both serving as intercessors accessible to ordinary people in their suffering — are among the most frequently noted examples of parallel development in world religion.

Ksitigarbha — The Bodhisattva of Deepest Vows

English
Ksitigarbha, “Earth Treasury,” has made the most profound vow of the four: “I will not attain buddhahood until the hells are emptied.” He has chosen to remain in the most painful regions of samsara — the hells — as guardian and consoler of those who suffer there, postponing his own final liberation indefinitely. His iconography is monastic: he appears as a monk with a staff and a wish-fulfilling jewel. His presence is associated with the dead and with prayers for the deceased, and his festival is the Ghost Festival (Zhongyuan, the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month).

In folk belief, Ksitigarbha and King Yama (the judge of the dead) serve distinct functions: Yama presides over judgment, while Ksitigarbha offers compassion and liberation. Ksitigarbha’s vow embodies a form of compassion that moves downward rather than upward: the holy figure does not retreat to transcendence but descends into darkness to be with those who cannot ascend. This “descending compassion” appears across multiple religious traditions — the Bodhisattva ideal in Buddhism, the compassionate deities in Hinduism, the saints who serve the outcast in Christianity — and may represent something genuinely universal in human moral imagination.

Four Qualities, One Complete Practice

English
Manjushri, Samantabhadra, Guanyin, and Ksitigarbha together describe a complete spiritual personality: wisdom (the capacity to perceive reality clearly), vow (the commitment to translate perception into sustained practice), compassion (the openness to receive the suffering of all beings), and descent (the willingness to go wherever suffering is greatest, without exception). No single quality is sufficient; each requires the others. Wisdom without compassion is cold and detached; compassion without wisdom is sentimental and ineffective; vow without wisdom and compassion becomes mechanical routine; descent without wisdom and vow risks losing itself in suffering without bringing liberation.

The four bodhisattvas are not merely objects of devotion but models of a complete spiritual life — a life that integrates contemplation and action, insight and relationship, transcendence and descent. This integration is Mahayana Buddhism’s most enduring contribution to the world’s spiritual traditions, and one that continues to find resonance across cultural and religious boundaries.
