Zheng He, Columbus, da Gama, Magellan · Four Voyages That Changed the World, Two Visions of the Sea
English
The fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries marked a pivotal era of global maritime exploration, during which four landmark voyages redefined human geographical cognition and reshaped the trajectory of world civilization. Zheng He’s seven transoceanic expeditions (1405–1433), Christopher Columbus’s transatlantic voyage to the Americas (1492), Vasco da Gama’s opening of the European maritime route to the Indian Ocean (1497–1499), and Magellan’s fleet’s first global circumnavigation (1519–1522) stand as monumental feats in the history of navigation.
These voyages originated from distinct historical contexts, political demands and civilizational logics, forming two completely different modes of maritime engagement between human civilizations. An objective and comprehensive comparison requires an impartial review of the historical achievements and inherent limitations of each voyage, avoiding excessive praise or simplistic negation of any historical event and figure, and adhering to a rigorous historical perspective.

Zheng He: Scale, Purpose, and the Road Not Taken
English
Zheng He’s expeditions were, by almost any measure, the largest maritime operations in pre-modern history. At their peak during the Yongle and Xuande reigns of the Ming Dynasty, his fleets comprised over two hundred ships — including dozens of massive treasure ships — and more than twenty-seven thousand crew members, soldiers, and envoys. The scale of shipbuilding, open-ocean navigation capability, and cross-regional coordination required to mount seven such expeditions between 1405 and 1433 far surpassed anything achieved by European navies of the same era.
The purposes were multiple: to project Ming imperial prestige, to establish and maintain tributary relationships across Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the East African coast, and to facilitate official trade and cultural exchange. The operating principle was the tributary system — a hierarchical framework in which foreign rulers acknowledged Chinese imperial supremacy through ritual submission and gift exchange, receiving in return recognition, gifts, and trading access. This system did not require territorial colonization.
It is accurate to note that Zheng He’s voyages did not establish permanent colonies or engage in systematic resource extraction. It is also accurate to note that the fleets used military force when necessary — against the pirate Chen Zuyi, in the intervention in Ceylon’s political succession — and that the tributary system was itself a coercive framework, even if its coercion operated differently from European colonial practices. The historical record supports neither simple condemnation nor simple celebration.
The decision to halt the voyages after 1433 — driven by a combination of fiscal pressure, bureaucratic opposition to eunuch-led maritime ventures, and Confucian ideological preference for agrarian inward governance — foreclosed a possible alternative trajectory for China’s engagement with the world. What that alternative might have produced is one of history’s genuinely open counterfactuals.

Columbus: Discovery and Catastrophe
English
In 1492, Christopher Columbus led a Spanish fleet across the Atlantic Ocean and landed in the Caribbean Islands, ending the millennia-long geographical isolation between the Eastern and Western Hemispheres. This voyage opened a new chapter in global geographical integration and triggered the far-reaching “Columbian Exchange,” which realized the two-way transmission of crops, livestock, and microorganisms between Eurasia and the Americas, comprehensively transforming the ecological structure, economic mode, and population layout of the global world.
Nevertheless, the arrival of European colonists represented by Columbus also brought unprecedented disasters to American indigenous civilizations. During his rule in the Caribbean, Columbus implemented a harsh forced labor system and brutal gold tribute quota policy. Subsequently, large-scale European immigration brought infectious diseases such as smallpox and measles, to which American indigenous people had no natural immunity. Coupled with long-term colonial exploitation, forced labor, and armed suppression, the indigenous population of the Americas dropped sharply by 50% to 90% within a century, causing a devastating blow to the independent indigenous civilizations that had developed for thousands of years.
This historical fact is not a modern moral judgment imposed on ancient figures, but an objective summary of historical consequences. Columbus’s behavior was consistent with the colonial expansion ideology and plunder-based economic logic of European maritime powers in the Age of Discovery. The historical progress of global geographical integration brought by his voyage was accompanied by the irreversible demise of regional ancient civilizations, reflecting the duality of early modern global maritime exploration.

da Gama: Armed Trade and Global Commercial Restructuring
English
From 1497 to 1499, Vasco da Gama completed his voyage from Portugal to the Indian Ocean, successfully opening the first direct maritime route connecting Europe and India. This route bypassed the traditional Eurasian overland trade routes controlled by the Ottoman Empire and Arab merchants, breaking the long-term monopoly of intermediate merchants on Eurasian commodity trade. It fundamentally adjusted the global trade center of gravity, gradually shifting the core of international trade from the traditional Mediterranean region to the Atlantic coastal areas, laying an important foundation for the rise of modern European maritime commerce.
Different from the equitable merchant trade networks that had existed in the Indian Ocean for thousands of years — developed by Arab, Indian, and Malay merchants relying on monsoon navigation — da Gama’s maritime trade model was based on military force and gunboat diplomacy. During his voyages, he repeatedly resorted to armed confrontation: bombarding coastal cities such as Calicut, refusing to conduct equitable commodity transactions with local regimes, and massacring innocent civilians on merchant ships. The Portuguese Indian Ocean trade system he established was essentially “armed trade,” which seized trade dominance through military deterrence, levied arbitrary transit taxes on passing ships, and broke the long-term stable and mutually beneficial trade order in the Indian Ocean region.
The opening of da Gama’s route promoted the rapid circulation of global spices, textiles, and specialty commodities, accelerating the integration of the Indian Ocean trade network into the global trading system, while also opening the prelude to European military colonial expansion in Asia. Its commercial progress and violent plunder coexisted, forming a unique expansion model of early modern maritime powers.

Magellan: The First Circumnavigation and Its Cost
English
In 1519, Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese navigator serving the Spanish royal court, led a fleet to sail westward, aiming to open a new maritime route to the Spice Islands. Although Magellan was killed in the 1521 Battle of Mactan in the Philippines, his crew continued the voyage under the leadership of Juan Sebastián Elcano, successfully returning to Spain in 1522 and completing the first human circumnavigation of the globe.
This voyage had milestone scientific and geographical significance. It empirically verified the spherical shape of the Earth for the first time in human history, accurately explored the true scale of the Pacific Ocean, corrected the geographical cognition errors of European academia at that time, and completed the preliminary mapping of the global maritime route network, greatly promoting the development of modern geography and global navigation technology.
At the same time, the voyage also fully exposed the expansion attributes of Iberian maritime exploration in the Age of Discovery. Magellan’s death stemmed from his forced intervention in local religious and political affairs: he attempted to coerce Philippine indigenous chiefs to convert to Christianity and submit to Spanish rule, which triggered fierce local resistance and armed conflict. For European navigators represented by Magellan, Columbus, and da Gama, maritime exploration was never limited to geographical discovery and trade expansion, but also carried the dual goals of religious diffusion and colonial rule — religious coercion was an important part of their overseas expansion system.

What the Comparison Reveals
English
A comparative analysis of the four great navigators’ voyages clearly presents two distinct maritime civilization models in the pre-modern world: the ancient Chinese tributary maritime model and the European colonial maritime expansion model. The two models originated from different national governance concepts, economic structures and civilizational traditions, with essential differences in core purposes, implementation modes and historical consequences.
Objectively, the Ming tributary maritime system focused on diplomatic communication and cultural exchange, with no active territorial plunder and colonial exploitation, reflecting the inclusive and interactive attribute of ancient Chinese maritime civilization. However, it was constrained by feudal hierarchical norms and imperial fiscal needs, lacking sustainable economic and institutional driving force, and eventually declined with the inward transformation of the Ming Dynasty’s governance. The European colonial maritime model took resource plunder, territorial occupation and cultural assimilation as its core goals, realizing the primitive accumulation of European capital, but bringing devastating damage to non-Western ancient civilizations and triggering long-term regional inequality in the global world.
This historical comparison is intended to restore the diversity of pre-modern global maritime civilizations, rather than to glorify or deny any civilization and model. Both maritime models are specific products of their respective historical eras and social systems, with unique historical rationality and inherent limitations. Viewing historical maritime exchanges from an objective and comprehensive perspective helps to understand the diversified development logic of human civilizations and avoid simplistic binary opposition and modern interpretation of ancient history.
