For more than two millennia, the classical tradition of Chinese civilization produced works of literature, philosophy, medicine, and art that remain among the most significant in human history. This section gathers the fours that emerged from that tradition: the four great novels, the four great tragedies of the stage, the scholars and physicians and poets whose thought shaped a civilization, and the material culture — brush, ink, paper, inkstone — through which that thought was transmitted.
