English
The great philosophical traditions of the world are not primarily answer-machines — they are question-refiners. What distinguishes Chinese Confucian-Daoist philosophy, ancient Greek philosophy, Indian philosophy, and Islamic philosophy from each other is less the specific conclusions they reach than the questions they prioritize and the methods they develop for pursuing them. Understanding these differences is one of the most effective ways to understand the civilizations that produced them.

English
The central preoccupation of classical Chinese philosophy — across Confucianism, Daoism, and their various syntheses — is not abstract metaphysics but concrete social ethics and existential practice. Unlike Western traditions that prioritize abstract ontology and logical deduction, Chinese philosophy anchors all thinking in real-life human interaction and cosmic harmony. What does it mean to be a good person in relation to others? How should rulers govern? How should the self be cultivated? The five key relationships (ruler-subject, parent-child, husband-wife, elder-younger sibling, friend-friend) constitute the basic moral universe within which Confucian thought operates, defining the norms of individual conduct and social governance.
Daoism addresses a complementary and transcendent question: what lies beyond and beneath the human world of constructed relationships and artificial rules? Laozi’s Dao — the underlying, eternal principle of the cosmos — cannot be named, fixed, or fully grasped by language and rational thinking. The highest form of human action (wu wei, non-forced action) is not passivity or inaction, but active alignment with the Dao’s natural rhythms and cosmic laws. As the core cosmological proposition of Daoism states, “The Dao follows ziran (spontaneity)”, laying the ultimate criterion for all human behavior.
The mainstream of the Chinese philosophical tradition is Confucian, yet the full picture only emerges through its inherent complementarity with Daoism. Together, they define a unique relational cosmological framework that rejects theological transcendence: Confucianism emphasizes the ordered hierarchical relationships between human beings and the interactive harmony between humanity and Heaven, focusing on worldly social governance and moral cultivation; Daoism emphasizes the spontaneous coexistence rhythms between humanity and nature, focusing on transcending artificial constraints and returning to cosmic authenticity. Neither posits a personal God as creator or judge; instead, the cosmos is understood as a dynamic, interconnected whole with which human life must be aligned to achieve ultimate harmony.

English
Ancient Greek philosophy’s most consequential and foundational contribution to human civilization is formal logic and systematic rational speculation — the standardized rules of valid inference that enable human beings to verify knowledge, distinguish truth from fallacy, and build rigorous ideological systems. This logical innovation, refined and systematized most rigorously by Aristotle, established the core template for Western scientific reasoning, academic research and philosophical speculation that has never been entirely abandoned in Western intellectual history.
Plato’s theory of Forms laid the core agenda of Western metaphysics for two millennia. He argued that the fleeting, imperfect sensory objects of daily life are merely imperfect copies of eternal, immutable, abstract ideal Forms — the only true, ultimate reality. Philosophy’s supreme mission is to transcend superficial phenomena and pursue the essential, eternal truth of the world. Building on Plato’s ideological framework, Aristotle constructed a comprehensive and systematic intellectual system: he classified all fields of human knowledge, perfected formal deductive logic, proposed teleological naturalism (all things move toward their inherent ultimate purposes), and founded virtue ethics — arguing that human virtue is not innate or acquired through rigid rule-following, but a stable character habit forged through long-term rational practice and behavioral accumulation.
The philosopher Alfred North Whitehead wrote in Process and Reality: “The safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato.” This famous assertion does not mean that subsequent Western thinkers merely repeated Plato’s views mechanically. Instead, it indicates that Plato pioneered the core problem framework of Western philosophy — exploring the relationship between phenomenon and essence, sensory experience and rational truth, individual existence and universal ideals. Almost all Western philosophers from ancient to modern times have launched their ideological explorations by responding to these core questions.

Indian Philosophy: Self, Suffering, and Liberation
English
Different from Greek philosophy’s focus on cosmic essence and logical truth and Chinese philosophy’s focus on social ethics and cosmic harmony, Indian philosophical traditions take individual spiritual salvation as their ultimate pursuit, centering on a set of ultimate existential questions largely overlooked by other ancient philosophies: What is the essence of the self (Atman)? Where does human suffering (dukkha) originate? How can humans break free from the cycle of reincarnation (samsara) and achieve eternal liberation? Multiple ideological schools have derived diverse but internally coherent answers, forming a pluralistic spiritual system.
The Vedanta school, a mainstream representative of the orthodox Indian philosophical tradition — where “orthodox” is used here in its technical scholarly sense (the six orthodox schools that accept the authority of the Vedas), not as a value judgment — advocates the unity of individual consciousness and cosmic ontology, proposing the core tenet “Brahman = Atman”: the individual self is not an independent existence but a partial manifestation of the universal cosmic consciousness (Brahman), and ultimate liberation lies in realizing this essential unity and breaking the illusion of individual separation. In contrast, Buddhist philosophy puts forward the radical theory of anatta (non-self), denying the existence of a permanent, independent self. It argues that all suffering stems from human attachment to impermanent things and the false cognition of a fixed self; liberation is achieved by abandoning attachment and recognizing the impermanence of all phenomena.
The Jain school contributes a unique epistemological breakthrough with anekantavada (the doctrine of manifold truth), best illustrated by the parable of the blind men and the elephant. Each blind man touches only a part of the elephant and draws a partial conclusion, yet each judgment is valid within its own scope. Crucially, this doctrine is not relativism that denies objective truth, but a profound epistemological humility: objective truth exists absolutely, but human finite perspectives can never fully capture its entirety. This ideological trait has fostered the inherent religious pluralism and inclusive cultural temperament of Indian civilization.

Islamic Philosophy: Reason and Revelation
English
Islamic philosophy (falsafa) is one of the most brilliant and influential cross-civilizational ideological achievements in human history. It originated from the creative integration of Islamic religious revelation tradition and ancient Greek rational philosophy. From the 9th to the 12th centuries, Islamic scholars launched a large-scale Arabic translation movement, systematically sorting out and inheriting the ideological achievements of Plato, Aristotle, Galen and other Greek thinkers, and on this basis, innovated and constructed a unique philosophical system that balances religious faith and rational speculation.
Ibn Sina (Avicenna, 980–1037), the “father of medieval philosophy”, proposed the famous “floating man” thought experiment five centuries before Descartes. He hypothesized a person suspended in midair with all sensory perceptions isolated, unable to perceive the external world and his own body. Even in this state, the person can still clearly perceive his own existence. This argument anticipated modern self-consciousness speculation, but with a different core purpose: Ibn Sina aimed to prove the immateriality, independence and eternity of the soul, while Descartes’ “I think, therefore I am” focused on establishing the absolute certainty of individual self-existence.
Ibn Rushd (Averroes, 1126–1198), known as “the commentator of Aristotle”, wrote authoritative and comprehensive commentaries on all of Aristotle’s major works. These commentaries became the core teaching materials of European medieval universities for centuries, directly promoting the revival of Greek philosophy in Europe and profoundly shaping the theological and ideological system of Thomas Aquinas and medieval Christian theology. The cross-civilizational knowledge transmission path of “Greek philosophy → Arabic translation and innovation → European revival” has become a crucial bridge connecting ancient Greek rational civilization and modern Western thought.
A lasting and productive internal tension lies at the core of Islamic philosophy: the contradiction and integration of rational speculation and religious revelation. Al-Ghazali (1058-1111), a master of Islamic theology, systematically criticized the excessive rationalization tendency of early Islamic philosophers in The Incoherence of the Philosophers. He argued that human rationality has inherent limitations, unable to touch the ultimate spiritual truths and divine mysteries that can only be perceived through mystical religious experience and divine revelation. This debate between reason and revelation has continued for thousands of years, not only shaping the dual rational-mystical temperament of Islamic philosophy, but also reflecting the universal dilemma of all religious and rational traditions.

The Conversation That Has Not Yet Happened
English
The four major philosophical traditions have never been completely isolated; they have experienced multiple rounds of penetration, integration and mutual transformation in history. Buddhist thought, with its profound theory of mind and spiritual transcendence, broke into Chinese ideological circles, complementing the worldly practicality of Confucianism and Daoism, and profoundly reshaping the development of Chinese philosophy. Neo-Confucianism of the Song and Ming dynasties achieved a major ideological innovation by “absorbing the essence of Buddhism and Daoism”, drawing on Buddhist mental cultivation theories and Daoist cosmological frameworks to reconstruct a systematic Confucian ontology and self-cultivation system. Greek rational philosophy was preserved, innovated and transmitted by Islamic scholars, becoming the spiritual bridge connecting ancient and modern Western civilization.
Nevertheless, historical dialogues between the four traditions are mostly one-way, partial and asymmetric. Under the specific historical conditions of each period, relatively less powerful civilizations often unilaterally absorbed the intellectual achievements of relatively more powerful ones, lacking equal, mutual, in-depth ideological collision and complementary innovation. A genuine cross-civilizational philosophical dialogue that takes Confucian relational ethics, Aristotelian virtue ethics, Buddhist non-self theory, and Islamic revelation rationalism as equal dialogue subjects, focusing on universal propositions of human ethics, cognitive methods, self-existence and cosmic order, has never been fully realized.
The outcome of such an equal dialogue is unpredictable, but its value is irreplaceable. Comparing the four traditions side by side, sorting out their overlapping core questions and divergent cognitive paths, analyzing their ideological convergence and essential conflicts, enables us to break the limitations of single civilization perspective, form a more comprehensive and three-dimensional understanding of human spiritual civilization, and re-examine the eternal propositions of human existence and value from a global philosophical perspective.
