Four Great Grottoes
Mogao, Yungang, Longmen, Maijishan · Buddhism Carved into the Living Rock of China
English
The four great Buddhist grottoes of China — the Mogao Caves at Dunhuang, the Yungang Grottoes in Shanxi, the Longmen Grottoes in Henan, and the Maijishan Grottoes in Gansu — stand as unparalleled treasures of Chinese cultural heritage and world Buddhist art. Carved and decorated successively from the fourth to the fourteenth century CE, spanning over a millennium, they preserve tens of thousands of exquisite Buddhist sculptures, murals, and architectural relics. These masterpieces not only record the spread and evolution of Buddhism in China but also fully reflect the integration of foreign religious culture with traditional Chinese aesthetics, bearing witness to the inclusive and innovative vitality of Chinese civilization.
Each grotto boasts distinct characteristics in scale, artistic style, period of florescence, and cultural connotation. Together, they constitute a complete chronological and stylistic evolution of Chinese Buddhist grotto art. For over ten centuries, countless artisans, patrons, monks, and pilgrims devoted their efforts to these cliff-bound creations, transforming religious belief into tangible, enduring artistic expression.

Mogao Caves — The Library in the Desert
English
Located at the western end of the Hexi Corridor in the Gobi Desert, the Mogao Caves at Dunhuang are the largest, richest, and most influential of the four great grottoes. Founded in 366 CE and constructed continuously through the Northern Dynasties, Sui, Tang, and Yuan dynasties, the site now preserves 735 grottoes, over 45,000 square meters of murals, and more than 2,400 painted sculptures — the world’s largest and most complete collection of Buddhist mural art.
Situated at the core hub of the ancient Silk Road, Mogao became a crucial intersection of Eastern and Western civilizations. Its art integrates traditions from China, India, Central Asia, Persia, and Tibet, forming a uniquely inclusive artistic style. In 1900, the discovery of nearly 40,000 Dunhuang manuscripts and cultural relics in the Library Cave completely reshaped the research paradigm of Silk Road history, Buddhist culture, and Sino-foreign cultural exchanges, earning Mogao the reputation of a “millennium library in the desert” and a living epitome of medieval Eurasian cultural integration.

English
Carved primarily in the second half of the fifth century under the patronage of the Northern Wei Dynasty, the Yungang Grottoes near Datong in Shanxi are a pinnacle of fifth-century Chinese stone carving art, often called a “treasure house of ancient Chinese carving art.” The site stretches for nearly one kilometer along the cliff, with 45 surviving major grottoes, 252 niches, and more than 51,000 stone Buddha statues, among which the tallest reaches 17 meters in height.
Yungang clearly presents the complete localization process of Buddhist art in China. The early statues inherit the classical Gandharan and Central Asian Buddhist styles, with deep-set features and robust figures, retaining distinct Western cultural characteristics. With the sinicization of the Northern Wei regime, the middle and later statues gradually adopted Chinese facial features, costumes, and elegant aesthetic sensibilities. This intuitive transformation from exotic Buddhism to localized Chinese Buddhism makes Yungang the most typical specimen for studying the localization of Buddhist culture in China.

English
Located on both banks of the Yi River in Luoyang, Henan, the Longmen Grottoes were mainly excavated during the Northern Wei and Tang dynasties (fifth through eighth centuries), representing the mature and peak stage of localized Chinese Buddhist art. With 2,345 grotto niches, over 100,000 Buddha statues, and more than 2,800 inscriptions, it is rated by UNESCO as “the highest peak of Chinese stone carving art.”
The Fengxian Temple complex is the essence of Longmen. Its central Vairocana Buddha, seventeen meters high, features a serene, majestic countenance of extraordinary psychological depth. It is widely believed that the Buddha’s features draw upon the appearance of Empress Wu Zetian, who financed the project, fully embodying the elegant, open, and prosperous aesthetic temperament of the Tang Dynasty. Unlike the exotic style of Yungang, Longmen’s Buddhist art is completely sinicized, integrating traditional Chinese ritual culture and aesthetic concepts — marking the full maturity of Chinese Buddhist grotto art.

Maijishan Grottoes — The Oriental Sculpture Gallery
English
Nestled in the forested hills of Tianshui, Gansu, the Maijishan Grottoes take their name from the mountain’s haystack-like shape. Unlike the stone-carved traditions of Yungang and Longmen, Maijishan is renowned for its painted clay sculptures, earning the title of the “Oriental Sculpture Gallery.” Most of its exquisite sculptures date from the Northern Wei, Sui, and Tang dynasties.
Built into a steep solitary sandstone cliff, the grottoes are connected by suspended wooden walkways, creating a uniquely perilous yet elegant landscape. Abandoning the grand monumentality of the other three sites, Maijishan’s sculptures feature gentle expressions, delicate lines, and a strong human warmth. The famous “Oriental Smile” Buddha figures, spanning over a thousand years, embody the gentle and subtle aesthetic of traditional Chinese culture — making Maijishan the most intimate and humanistic work among the four great grottoes.
