四大名砚：端砚、歙砚、洮砚、澄泥砚 English Among all scholar’s tools, the inkstone is the most philosophically loaded: it requires the writer to undergo a period of preparation before setting brush to paper. Grinding the ink stick on the stone’s surface with water — a…

四岳·神圣山岳：泰山、华山、衡山、恒山 English Mountains are among humanity’s most consistent sacred symbols. Their elevation places them physically closer to the sky — the domain of divinity in nearly every known religious tradition. Their geological permanence contrasts with human transience in ways that…
四时·八节·二十四节气 English The Twenty-Four Solar Terms — ershisi jieqi — is one of the most refined systems for reading the rhythms of the natural world ever developed by any civilization. Inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2016,…

文房四宝：笔、墨、纸、砚 English Brush, ink, paper, inkstone. At the level of function, these are simply the instruments of writing. What is notable is what Chinese literati culture made of them across more than a thousand years: objects of connoisseurship, aesthetic discrimination,…
