English
Somewhere in the fifth century BCE, two civilizations — one in China, one in the Greek world — were independently developing frameworks for understanding the fundamental structure of the cosmos. In China, the system of four directional guardians and their associated forces was taking its classical form. In Greece, Empedocles was proposing that all matter is composed of four elements: earth, water, fire, and air. Both reached for four. Both sought to give order to the world. And both produced frameworks that would shape their respective civilizations for more than two thousand years.

Different Questions
English
The most fundamental difference between the two systems is the question each is trying to answer. The Four Symbols ask: how is the world organized in space and time? What forces govern the east and the west, the spring and the autumn, the rising and the setting? The system is fundamentally relational: it maps correspondences between direction, season, element, creature, color, organ, and moral quality, creating a web of meaning in which every part is connected to every other part.
The four elements ask: what is the world made of? What are the fundamental substances from which everything visible is composed? The system is fundamentally material: it identifies constituents, and explains the diversity of the visible world as a result of different proportions and combinations of these underlying substances. Earth is solid and cold; Water is fluid and cold; Fire is hot and rising; Air is hot and mobile. Matter in all its forms is earth and water and fire and air in different configurations.
The difference between these two questions — how is the world organized? vs what is the world made of? — reflects a deep divergence between two civilizational modes of attention. The Eastern system pays attention to relations, patterns, and cycles; the Western system pays attention to substances and constituents. Neither question is more fundamental; both are genuine and important ways of engaging with reality. But they generate very different kinds of knowledge, and the traditions they gave rise to have developed in very different directions.

The Same Number, Different Meanings
English
Both systems chose four as their organizing number, and the question of why deserves attention. The Four Symbols’ four follows from the four cardinal directions — east, west, south, north — which are themselves a product of solar observation: the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, and from this axis the other two directions are derived. Four directions is the minimum number that gives a complete spatial orientation. The four elements’ four has a different origin: Empedocles chose four because he was trying to account for the fundamental categories of sensory experience — solid, liquid, gaseous, and the energy of heat — and found that four was sufficient to generate all the diversity of the visible world.
What is remarkable is that both arrived at four through entirely different reasoning, and that both produced systems capable of sustaining two thousand years of intellectual elaboration. This suggests that four is not merely a cultural choice but a number with genuine structural utility: small enough to be held in mind simultaneously, large enough to capture the major dimensions of the domain being organized. The history of human thought is full of four-part schemes — psychological, cosmological, medical, ethical — and the persistence of the number across such diverse contexts suggests that there is something about four that resonates with how minds organize complex reality.

English
This compendium began with the observation that Four appears with remarkable consistency across the cultures and traditions of the world. The Eastern Four Symbols and the Western Four Elements are perhaps the most fundamental expression of this pattern: two complete cosmological frameworks, developed independently, using the same number to organize the same ambition — making the cosmos legible. Placed side by side, they do not resolve into a single framework, and they are not intended to. They are two different answers to one of the oldest human questions: what kind of place is this, and how should we orient ourselves within it? The answers are different. The question is the same.
